A copper alloy mount from a medieval laver. The mount is in the form of a dog's head and neck. The head resembles 14th/15th century spouts which sometimes show a dog's head at the front. Although quite corroded, one can still see the snout, eyes and ears of the dog. On the back it has a deep circular hollow which was for the attachment of a handle, and the break at the neck is where the head would have been soldered to the side of the vessel.
Finds of mounts are not uncommon since the mount represents the laver's greatest point of weakness and thus is most vulnerable to being broke…

A copper-alloy zoomorphic object with an iron core. The object consists of a curved shaft made of copper alloy, and a zoomorphic head at one end. The head has an outward facing “face” with a pointed chin, two horizontal grooves across the middle, slanted rectangular eyes which are holes and pointed ears (of which one is broken). Back to back with this face is another which is much more functional. It has a similar shield shape and has two rectangular holes at the top which could be interpreted as eyes, and a vertical rectangular hole which could be a mouth or nose. The two faces ar…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of Roman bow brooch, with all original edges missing and an incomplete openwork catchplate on the reverse. probably Roman in date. It measures 28.3x(max)15.96x0.81mm and the catchplate extends to the reverse c.7mm. It weighs 2.02g.
The bow has a central groove running its length. Inside this groove are tiny zig-zag punches. On the reverse are the two ends of the catchplate where they join the bow.

A probable corroded lid from a cast copper-alloy Roman seal box. The fragment comprises of the sub-oval lid and the vestigial remnants of the protrusions; one presumably the truncated hinge loop. One lug is bent down far more than the other and is narrower. The lid is flat and sub-oval, with abrasions to the edges. Within a border is a recessed field bearing eight pellets in low relief, arranged seven around one in the centre. This pattern can be found on a seal box lid recorded on this database - WMID4686. A post medieval Venetian coin; a soldino of Agostino Barbarigo (1486-1501) made of an unusual alloy of gold and silver which appears golden coloured instead of the usual silver. This design was used by Barbarigo before he changed over to the new (and much more common) soldino design. However, the style overall is bad, especially the lettering and the mint mark of N over M to the right of the doge is not listed in the detailed catalogue (Barrie Cook pers comm.) This, and the unusual metal suggests that it is some form of contemporary copy or an unknown variety. The coin is discoloured …

One arm of the L is broken close to one of the square panels, but the other has a plain rectangular area followed by a further square panel with part of a ring-and-dot, suggesting a repe…

An incomplete fragment of a cast copper-alloy probable end cap (terminal) from a scale-tang knife of post-medieval date. The terminal is heavily abraded being broadly square in plan and sub-rectangular (D shaped) in cross section. On the reverse face a D shaped cast vertical groove is present which divides the cap evenly into two parts. It is likely that this groove or slot would have originally been much deeper and would have enabled the upper part of the tang to be accommodated. The upper face is domed and the edges are slightly faceted. This face is decorated with two parallel line…

A cast copper-alloy Roman finger-ring with sub-oval hoop given the flattened bezel. The bezel is trapezoidal in cross-section given its bevelled edges on the upper surface. Within a central rectangular recess is enamel that has decayed to a dull red colour. On the bevelled sides are minute stamped letters which have been checked by a number of volunteers. They appear to read: CDTMA // VXTE, although only the 'M' on one side and the 'TE' on the other can be seen with clarity. This does not appear to correlate to the name of a deity or common saying, but further work is needed. The shou…

Cast copper-alloy fragments from a Roman life-sized statue of a horse. The fragments were discovered in plough soil within an area measuring approximately 2m square. (UPDATE: An additional fragment was found in 2013, recorded on the PAS database as LIN-666619).
There are eight fragments in total, three of which join together to form a larger fragment. This find is discussed in Worrell and Pearce 2011: 410-411, and more comprehensively by Dr Kosmas Dafas, who refined the identification of these Roman statue fragments as coming from a horse (K. Dafas: forthcoming). The descriptions t…
