Fourteen pieces of glazed red eathenware vessels dating to the end of the 17th to first half of the 18th century all found together in an area of the garden with a wine bottle and pipes of similar date. Calcereous deposits suggest highly acidic environment with ash, ie dung heap or latrine.
The pieces mostly seem to be of the same fabric, high fired, dark to mid orange with occasional mid to dark grey thin cores and occasional (c.5%) fine sand inclusions including very occasional very fine white quartz. The pieces mostly have very unworn breaks, most old but a few fresh. The breaks…

The sherds all have abundant poorly sorted quartz and limestone temper up to 3.5mm across with occasional pieces up to 5.mm across and occasional rounded ironstone or grog inclusions. The fabric is pale with a mid-dark grey core and pale grey to pale buff-grey surface in un-sooted areas. T…

A Medieval ceramic body sherd, probably dating to the fourteenth century. It is likely to derive from an open mouthed vessel ('cooking-pot'), although the sherds is too fragmentary for a judgment of form to be made. The sherd is unusually pale firing, very pale grey on the interior and core and pale buff on the exterior. Weight 2.45g.
David Dawson has commented that this pale firing but heavil…

56 pieces of burnt clay of total weight 800 grams, possibly from an oven of uncertain date. The clay is amorphous with only a few voids from organic inclusions or imprints as one sees on daub. There is no evidence of layering as one might expect in a kiln, furnace or cob. Occasional small rounded iron stone inclusions and very small chalk or limestone inclusions almost certainly reflect natural inclusons in the clay rather than temper. The pieces are all amorphous and friable with angluar fractures on all faces. Only two have small areas of surface, smoothed but poorly finished with c…

A post medieval ceramic vessel sherd dating to the period c. AD 1700 - 1800. The fabric is a hard earthenware and is an off-white/buff colour. Both surfaces exhibit traces of a blue and white tin glaze with a floral pattern. The shard probably derives from the Bristol or Staffordshire kilns, however, it is not possible to clearly state the provenance due to the abraded state of the sherd.
The sherd measures 40.79mm in length, 27.56mm maximum width, 20.08mm minimum width, is 7.33 and weighs 7.48g.
