A silver or white metal item of post medieval date. The fine-walled but flattened cone has a broad internal lip around the open bottom edge. The entire outer surface is decorated with flowers and leaves. There are no attachment fittings or elements for suspension. Judy Rudoe, British Museum, comments: "The shape is baffling, with no obvious method of attachment and what may be an empty stone setting at the front. The decoration recalls 19th century chasing with flowers and foliage, but it may not be European."

Part of a silver filigree jewellery item, of post-medieval date. In plan it is in the form of a butterfly with rounded wing tips. The 'wings' have five evenly disposed cells each, four being openwork and the fifth having a c.2.8mm diameter faceted clear (probably cut glass or rock crystal) stone in a cuplike setting. There is an additional stone in the centre, which is slightly larger than the other two, being c3.5mm in diameter. The reverse is flat and has three green marks on the 'thorax' (two at the top and one at the bottom) where solder was presumably applied to fix it to so…

A complete plain gold finger ring dating to the late Post Medieval to modern period (c. AD 1719-2000). The ring is a very thin, undecorated band, with a D-shaped cross-section. There is a hallmark on the inside of the band depicting 'WU'. The object is similar in style to YORYM-CEA771 and ESS-F1E6C3. Judy Rudoe (pers. comm. 2019) has also stated that in the absence of identifiable maker's marks, there is not enough evidence to date this ring to pre-1719. Therefore, owing to its similarity to other rings recorded on the PAS database and the information provided by Judy Rudoe the obj…

A post medieval gold finger ring with four faceted stones that may - or may not - be emeralds. A fifth socket, which presumably held a further stone, is empty. The four remaing stones are held by a claw style of mount. The ring has no inscription or maker's mark. The scroll-work of the bevel and shoulders, the faceting of the stones, and the claw mounts suggests a late Georgian or early Victorian date of manufature. While this find was reported as possible treasure, the decision of the relevant curator at the British Museum was that this is not treasure, due to the style of the rin…

A gold finger-ring with turquoise enamel bezel. The exterior of the band is decorated with seven smaller oval turquoise enamel settings, spaced at regular intervals. Between each of these settings the band narrows and expands to form a collared effect. On the reverse of the setting are series of lines radiating from the centre to create a scalloped appearance. Discussion: After discussions with colleagues at the British Museum, it is our view that the decoration on this ring indicates that is likely to date from the mid to late-Georgian period. It is broadly similar to rings in th…
