Copper alloy unidentified object. A small narrow cast rectangular-section bar of width 3.7mm, with a possibly zoomorphic rounded terminal resembling the eyes of a fly at one end; it is plain at the other end. Two drilled holes of diameter 1.3mm are set near the rounded terminal, between low flanges and a ridge linking them which bears four neatly incised transverse cuts. Here, two pairs of opposed half-round knops project from either side of the bar, slightly offset both from each other and from the holes, perhaps to represent legs. The terminal itself is divided by a tiny central rid…

An incomplete iron object of uncertain date. The object is roughly oval in plan and flat in profile. The object may have been sharpened at one end so could be the remains of a blade. The possibly sharpened end is slightly flattened, whilst the opposite end tapers and is rounded off. The object could also represent spillage from metalworking. It has mid-green copper alloy staining and shows signs of corrosion on both faces. The overall dimensions are as follows: 79.19mm in length, 31.47mm in width, 6.94mm in thickness and 67.72g in weight.

A copper alloy unidentified object, possibly dating to the Medieval period. The object comprises a broadly rectangular body, with a rectangular cross section, with three internally cast projections extending sideways from one edge. The centrally placed projection is triangular in plan, while those situated at each terminal are semi-circular in plan with a circular perforation possibly for attachment. One of these projections and perforations is now incomplete. Above these larger circular perforations situated in the body of the object are two smaller circular perforations. On the o…

An incomplete, possibly cut, cast copper alloy object of uncertain use and date, but potentially either later Early-medieval or a post-medieval revival piece. The object is flat but is curved like a horn with a squared terminal 16.7mm wide, while the thinner end is 7.4mm wide. This end is broken. There is a sprue of metal bent up and curved from one edge, which does not appear to have any decorative features and seems to be another element of the object. Both faces of the 'horn' are intricately decorated with scolled leaves and vines with a beast at the wider terminal; each beast is …

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast object, flat on one flat side and with a prominent convex drum-shaped feature on the other, which is elsewhere flat with a median thickness of c.2.8mm. Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be a post-medieval hinge, as the lack of pin gear and drum shaped feature disqualify it from being an Early Anglo-Saxon brooch. The form resembles that of a small and mutilated long brooch, though there is no trace of pin gear and the drum in position of 'bow' is at right angles to what would be expected, and is solid. Traces of gilding remain on one side of…

A cast copper alloy unidentified object of Early Medieval to Medieval date. The object is conical and faceted with an oval base. The object tapers towards the top which is rounded and complete. Four rounded knops decorate each side of the object just below the rounded top. The object is decorated with a series of punched dots forming a border around the bottom edge of the object. Seven punched dots run from this border up two faces of the object to the central knop. The base is undecorated. The object has a dark green patina and is in good condition. The object seems too large to b…

An incomplete copper alloy artefact of uncertain identification and function, possibly a sword pommel of Early Medieval to Medieval dating (AD 700 to AD 1500). The artefact is sub cuboid in shape. A circular perforation (hole) is present in the base, with an internal diameter of 8.3 mm. A sub circular flat border is present around this perforation. Possible arms extend to either side. These arms curve upwards, with a recurved tip. The top of this possible sword pommel extends with these curvilinear shapes and it has been folded over with the tip touching the base. It measures 63…

Possibly complete gilded copper alloy object of probable Post Medieval date. The object is triangular in plan and circular in section. The larger, upper end is open and the object narrows to a closed point at the lower end. A hard, compacted material fills the open cavity, which appears to be mineralised organic, probably cord. A decorative wirework piece is applied to towards to top of the object, situated approximately one third from the opening. This panel is formed of a large central circle flanked by two smaller circluar knops forming upwardly pointing spirals. A third base spira…

A late Early Medival/early Medieval copper alloy unidentified artefact. The artefact is composed of three integral elements which are in a row. Firstly there is a triangular element which has a central circular perforation which has bevelled edges on both faces. The terminal is vertical, flat, and is shaped in the form of two vertical drops joined at the tips. The tips correspond to the perforation on this element. This triangular element has an integral sub-lozenge protruding from the tip which has an oval central perforation, again with bevelled edges on both faces. This element is …

An incomplete and undatable copper alloy unidentified object, consisting of a rectangular plate (14.27x17.22mm) from one edge of which extends an arched arm, expanding into something flatter at its other end, although only a tiny fragment of this survives. At this point to the reverse however is a curving hook, in the same plane as the arm, but curving first backwards then forwards again. The tip is worn and it is uncertain if it is a break or not. An apparently complete copper alloy unidentified object, probably Early-Medieval to Medieval in date (c.400-1500) and with no obvious breaks. Measures 30.08x14.03x2.91mm and weighs 3.93g. The object is flat and curving in profile, with one crimped end, tapering and thickening to become D-shaped in cross-section (5.23x2.91mm) though apparently not crimped to hold anything - there is a very slight opening only. The object is otherwise rectangular in cross-section with the opposite end measuring 14.03x1.42mm. The sides narrow to c.13mm, whereby they thicken (2.76mm) and taper sharply i…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy unidentified object of probable late early-medieval date. The artefact is broken at both ends. The top end is incomplete, a recess is visible at the break, presumably the cylindrical recess would have accommodated a circular cross-sectioned axis bar. The cylindrical recess is at a one hundred and thirty five degree angle suggesting that the artefact was offset to the bar. The artefact gradually tapers towards a zoomorphic head. The head is depicted through raised mouldings and incisions. Located at the top of the head is a V-shaped incision which is sit…

An unidentified lead alloy object of probable later medieval or post medieval date 1400-1800. The artefact is irregular in plan and profile - it resembles the designs seen on lead tokens of this period, although it's size and shape make it relatively undiagnostic. The fragment has raised ribs on the back forming a cross whilst the front has an irregular pattern - possibly showing a head / profile facing left. It is a mid grey colour with a sound patina. It measures 23.5mm length, 24.0mm width and is 2.9mm thick.

A fragment of thick lead sheeting, measuring 69.15x56.85x5.19mm and weighing 106.01g. To the reverse it is plain but to the other face, the top two thirds are taken up with a panel of lettering - the remanants of an A possibly, R or E and a ligated C or O and H. The stem of the first leg of the H continues vertically to the break, which appears to be relatively recent. The opposite edge appears complete. The break at the A has been cut, but is patinated. A corroded iron trident-shaped artefact of possible Roman date. The object has lost one of its side prongs. The central prong is enlarged (W.: 15.85mm) before tapering to a point. It has been bent in profile. The tang is solid and tapers in both length and thickness over c. 37mm. It has a rectangular cross-section. The artefact could have acted as a weapon as it seems somewhat over elaborate as an agricultural or fishing tool.

A fragment of an unidentified copper-alloy object. The piece is roughly rectangular in plan and has three complete sides, the shortest (broken)side revealing a pointed-oval section. From the broken edge it widens slightly towards the complete end (blade) but tapers gradually in thickness with a more pronounced bevel, on both sides, nearer the blade. It is also bevelled front and back towards the sides; these sides are chipped and worn and may originally have been slightly wider, but their regularity suggests they are nearly complete.
