Modern silver bracelet terminal in the form of a moulded zoomorphic head incised with circular pupils within lentoid eyes surrounded by a banded pattern of parallel chevrons with transverse grooves creating a scale-like skin, with moulded vertical ears with a central groove, and a curled upper lip and snout and an open mouth. The underside of the mouth and jaw also has a pattern of transverse grooves with perpendicular parallel incised lines between them, giving the appearance of scaled skin. The slightly recessed broken end is not a socket but solid, suggesting that this is a termina…

A 1920s/30s Art-Deco urn (garden decoration) made from a conglomerate man-made material best termed as concrete. The object stands 230mm high, with an outer diameter of 185mm. The walls of the top of the piece are 32mm thick. The 'cup' is 80mm deep. The base has a diameter of 132mm. The object has been cast in concrete, probably mass produced in a mould. There are no tool or working marks that would be visible had it been carved or ground from stone, even a soft stone such as sandstone. On the inside edge of the urn is visible a small strip of iron embedded into the surface. T…

An incomplete incomplete finial from a silver tea pot lid, of Late Georgian to Victorian dating (AD 1750s to AD 1900s) Approximately 90% of the finial is present, with the base and most of the body present. The top is incomplete. The finial originally had a biconvex body with facetted sides (creating a hexagonal shape), with a similar hexagonal base. It was originally hollow, but now contains soil from the burial environment. A casting seam is present around the middle of the body. The base appears to be have been made from a separate piece of probable silver and soldered to the…

An iron spear of Modern date, possibly a replica or ethnographic piece. It has an angular blade which is a lozenge in section. The neck is sub-square in section and the socket is a rounded square near the neck, gradually changing to oval in section at the end. The socket appears to be of solid construction. An unusual feature, and the one that indicates a Modern date, is a bolt across the socket of which only the hexagonal head and nut can be seen projecting from the sides of the socket. The socket is full of earth and corrosion. When recovered from the ground, the spear had laye…

Lead Pump seal Weights, as kindly identified by Dr Kevin Leahy. Two cast plates (a and b). Each object is a plate with one rounded end and an opposed straight edge, formed like the heel of a boot. The objects have bevelled edges, which for a heel would be angled inward and forward. The 'upper' surfaces bear integrally cast waisted studs with rounded heads of diameter 22-25mm. The larger of these objects retains fragments of thick (circa 4mm) leather in the waist of the stud, which probably passed through a slightly smaller hole cut in the leather. The leather would be oiled to serve…

Lead or lead alloy mount, probably fairly modern 1800 to 1900AD, in the shape of a knight on a horse (the knight's head has come off & it looks like something may have come adrift under the horses hooves). It appears to have been mounted using a central stud. It measures 120mm long and 78mm wide. There is a copper alloy mount of similar subject on the PAS, BH-B91E31, but it has been attached at multiple points. It is worth noting that there were Pilgrim badges with a similar subject (possibly George & the Dragon)and made of the similar material (lead or lead alloy). There appears to b…

Cast pewter mount in the form of a horse's head with bridle and blinkers. The mount has been decorated on both sides, with similar detail on the head of the horse, but the mane has more curved and concentric lines on one side than the other. The object was obviously meant to be seen from both sides so it would not have been a badge, but perhaps more likely a finial or toy as it has no means of attachment left extant. The body of the horse is missing but the edge of the base of the neck does not appear to have been broken off a larger piece, so this may represent the complete object. o…

Cast copper alloy chisel or wedge with integral iron butt end which is lozenge-shaped in plan and waisted with two expanded ends in profile. The blade end is quite thick (4mm) and expanded equally on both sides in profile, at right angles to the hafted end. There are several nicks or edges, parallel to and along the blade which suggest it was wedged into something harder than itself and perhaps hammered with an iron hammer at the opposite end. The iron remains seem to be integral to the hafted end which is solid and not socketed and there is a line running through the iron at right an…

An incomplete cast copper alloy winder from a pocket watch. The central swivel is a trefoil shape, with a circular loop at the top. The arm is an irregular floral shape with a vertical support protruding below. There is a cast floral design all over. It is in a fair condition, with a reddish patina. Watch winders have been discussed by Gordon Bailey, Detector Finds 2, Greenlight Publishing, Witham, 1993, page 26-7. He shows examples similar to this but decorated with the heads of George II and Queen Caroline (1727-1737) showing that they are 18th century. 37.03mm L x 22.78mm H 2.51g

A fragment of a late seventeenth or eighteenth century two part, cast copper alloy buckle frame. The surviving part is in the form of a human head, possibly a king's head. The head is facing and has a curved hand on his head which has three grooves and may be the band of a crown. Above the band, is a triangular projection at end with a square pellet on, which may in fact be the side fleurs of the crown. The face is very stylised with a large nose which is connected to the eyes by swirling line. The curved bushy, chin length hair is decorated with square pellets. At the back of pin hea…

An iron spear, weighing 227g. The spear comprises three elements. It has a square sectioned, tapering tang which would have fitted into a shaft. This has been hammered from the middle circular sectioned part of the spear. The spear head is leaf-shaped with a raised ridge running down either side. The tip is broken. It is probably a spearhead brought to this country from India or Africa. A search through the usual literature on spearhead found no British parallel for the tanged shaft but there was an African weapon with similar shaped blades and with bindings around their shafts …
