This identification was kindly offered by Dr Kevin Leahy. Given there is only a single hole for a nail to attach the putative strap to a door or shutter, and given that the hole is far from its finished end, an alternative interpretation as a tine detached from a tool such as a hay rake or eel spear might also be entertained. The finder's suggestion that this could be a weapon fragment is not s…

Objects with spatulate ends, or double-ended implements with one spatulate end, are a feature of monastic asemblages of the later 8th and early 9th centuries. Vesica shaped lead object with faceted sides, one face plain the bears traces of raised decoration. This object was described as the blank for a seal matrix but some caution must be exercised, in addition to the lack of an inscription, a lug and fleur-de-lys on the back it should be noted that this object is smaller than any of the other lead matrices recorded by the Scheme, most having a length of around 30mm, not the 25.2mm seen here.

Copper alloy stirrup mount, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy, who comments '...see David Williams' 'Stirrup Terminals', Finds Research Group, Datasheet 24, particularly Fig. 3.The Urnes type eye is a give away. It's still a nice find, and David saw them as being an East Anglian/Lincolnshire type'. A small oval-ended cast hollow object, in the zoomorphic form of a quadruped beast with a gaping open jaw, and with short forelimbs resting on a broad flat tail with two grooves at its end. The flat tail may indicate the subject to be a beaver: a creature known to Anglo-Saxon England, if …

A lead medieval seal matrix, flat with a looped lug on the reverse (now squashed). Pointed oval, 35.1 mm x 21.8mm. Lug at 12 o'clock position. The central motif is a tall and thin stylised fleur de lys. The inscription reads + S' AVICE MARSCAL (Seal of Avice Marshall). The M is rather unusual, looking a bit like an E on its side. is reading is rather uncertain due to the level of corrosion on the matrix and the way in which the letters have been drawn. It is a personal seal and features a name, rather than a motto. 13th century.

Cast copper alloy pin from a D-shaped buckle, possibly dating from the Anglo-Saxon period, c.AD 575-625. The pin has broken off from the base plate above the loop that would have wound around the pin bar. The broken end is circular in section and 8 mm in diameter and the pointed end has been chiselled from both sides into a rectangular edge that is 5 mm in length and 3 mm in width. The base plates were often shield shaped as seen in D-shaped buckles illustrated in MacGregor & Bolick (1993) om pp.203-204, nos.34.45-34.52. See LVPL-A115C7 for a similar buckle on the database, which i…

An incomplete copper alloy Mount of Post-Medieval date (AD 1650-1750). The object is composed of a large open work plate in the form of highly stylised floral motif, similar in form to a pot of lilies which (as the finder comments) is a symbol of Annunciation within Medieval Christian symbolism. The plate is composed of an upper trifoliate of lilies with incised lines on each to indicate petals. The stems join at the centre of the plate and converge into an inverted sub-triangular pot/vessel which expands out in the lower portion of the object to the rectangular body of the pot/vessel…
