A post-medieval 16th or early 17th century AD copper alloy belt suspension loop (cf Read 790). The suspension loop is probably a sword hanger. The suspension loop is intact, projecting from the top edge at right angles to the plane of the plate, and the artefact is apparently in fair condition. The bare metal of the suspension loop has a dark green patina which also shows on the reverse side. The face of the loop is decorated but it is difficult to make out but it is decorated and would have probably originally been gilded. Compare PAS numbers LEIC-7B6454 and IOW-051E63. The length is…

A copper-alloy strap-slide dating to the 10th century. It is flat and rectangular, and decorated with a crude relief Borre-style ring chain. On the ridges of the ring chain the remains of gilding (or the bare copper alloy) can be seen. On one side of the outer face is a triangular perforation, apparently a casting flaw.
On the reverse is a rectangular attachment loop, D-shaped in cross-section. The loop is integral and has possibly been repaired at one side where there is an overlap of copper alloy. The loop has been pushed inwards in the centre during antiquity.
There is a smal…

Cast copper alloy swivel or strap fitting dating from the early medieval period, that is the 11th or 12th century. The fitting appears complete but very worn. It is composed of two halves which are identical. They are mounted on an internal rivet and rotate freely, as can be seen in the finder's images taken from different angles. The cross-section of both segments is circular at the bottom/in the centre, but they each terminate in a small animal or possibly quadruped which sits on the apex of each half. The surfaces of both halves are extremely worn but some of the moulded decoration…

A pair of incomplete copper alloy strap loop fittings dating to the medieval period. The mounts are stylistically very similar and may have come from the same mould and as they were found in close proximity likely came from the same belt. The fittings have different decorative attributes and are therefore described separately.
Mount A) An animal's head and snout, with upturned lip, is set horizontally with a slightly raised head. The snout narrows and a small area appears to have been damaged through use, as this is the section that would have fitted into the loop to secure the fit…

A copper alloy and iron Viking strap fitting of Early Medieval date. The object is sub-triangular in plan, expanding at either end and waisted in the centre. The wider expanded end is square in cross-section and has an iron core from which projects the remains of a possible circular rivet for attachment. From the solid square end the object narrows and thins towards the opposite end which is split. The split measures 10mm in length, and is held together by a copper alloy circular rivet at the terminal with a diameter of 3mm.

An incomplete copper-alloy Early Medieval strap slide, dating to the period c.AD 850-1000. The strap slide is oval in plan, with wear to the edges where pieces are missing. A central raised ridge runs from the apex to lower edge. This is flanked by ring and dot decoration arranged in an irregular pattern. A incised groove can just be discerned circumnavigating the perimeter. The reverse has a broken projection at the lower and upper apex, and these two projections would have joined to form an integral loop. The reverse is undecorated. A brown patina with patches of light green is on t…

Probably a cast copper strap mount also called a 'pressure tectonic' dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman period, that is c. 100BC-AD200. The artefact is nearly complete and in very good condition. It is of roughly triangular shape with a flat top and three large spikes on the underside. One of the points of the triangle terminates in a break, but there is no further damage or breakages on the other side. Opposite the break, the other two points of the triangle terminate in two ornamental knops with carved or incised crosses on the circular tops. Below, the copper alloy is qui…

Copper-alloy strap-fitting, perhaps a strap union or junction, measuring 28.4 x 20.6 x 6.8mm and weighing 8.26g. The strap union is in the form of two roughly triangular loops with straight outside edges, recessed to form narrow strap bars, and linked by a central area on which is mounted a three-dimensional animal head. It has bulbous eyes, flaring nostrils, pronounced snout and pointed ears and measures 10mm long by 4.6mm wide by 2.8mm tall. To either side of the nostrils extend what could be limbs, first horizontally until they are outside of the lower triangular loop, and then tur…

Cast copper alloy miscast or burnt object, possibly dating from the early medieval period, that is c. 10th-12th century. Rather than spillage or casting waste, this object looks like either a mis-cast or a burnt object. Casting spillage is usually single faced, the back having been open to the air and plain; this object appears to have been double sided. The 'interlace' strands could by Urnes style but there is no sign of any zoomorphic element and the bosses are extremely uncommon for Urnes style decorated objects. The bosses/studs on one face suggest that it was a mount - a belt or …

A possibly incomplete copper alloy Late Early-Medieval (1000-1100) zoomorphic strap fitting, possibly a strap-end or strap-distributor. It is possibly in the form of a bird's head, with the point opposite the widest end having a very worn rivet projecting from the underside. In profile this resembles a hooked beak. However it also appears to have moulded horns. It measures 26.92mm in length, 11.76mm in max.width and 3.92mm in max.depth, and weighs 3.58g.
The object is triangular in shape with two rivet holes (c.3mm diameter) at the wider end, retaining traces of iron rivets. This end…
