A Medieval (1200-1400) strap end of copper alloy composition (as evidenced by substantial greening), with remaining elements of silvering. The object is narrow and thin, tapering from 10mm at the widest surviving part to 7mm at the narrowest. There are two visible plates connected by a pin, though it is clear from the break point at the narrowest end that there were originally two pins and it is at this weak point it has snapped. some compressed dried soil obscures a view of the inside. The upper plate is decorated with a clear border, the area inside of which has remnants of a c…

An Anglo-Saxon or Anglian strap end (Thomas classification Class A, Type 1). The strap end has been made from one tapering oval plate of copper alloy with a flattened end at the attachment end of the fitting. Two rivet holes would have been located at this end of the strap end, but the attachment end has been badly damaged. The other terminal of the strap end has a much stylised zoomorphic head. The head projects away from the main body of the strap end as a tapering and facetted knop. The front plate of the strap end has been decorated with a design in high relief, the object is worn…

An Anglo-Saxon strap end, Thomas class B, type 1. The strap end is made of one piece of cast copper-alloy. This strap end dates to the 8th - 11th century. The strap end has a fan-shaped attachment end, which has three rivet holes arranged in a triangle with a decorative ring and dot in the centre. Below the attachment end the strap end then gets much thinner, with a rectangular section and terminates with what should be a zoomorphic head. The head is highly stylised. The reverse of the strap end is flat and undecorated. The metal is mid reddish-brown in colour.

Copper alloy strap end. A small cast asymmetrical tapered strap end with an expanded wedge-shaped split end occupied by a large bordered eye-shaped element of interlace; a pair of stumpy protrusions [legs or fins?] on one side only; continuing arcs of deeply defined interlace along its narrow body; and a longitudinally grooved and narrow pointed tongue with chevrons along its length protruding from narrow jaws, one possibly undershot and the other perhaps bearing a small rounded protruding eye. The interlace which begins strongly at the wedge-shaped end may continue in a pattern perha…

An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy and silver strap-end (c. 800-c. 900). This object seems to be a hybrid between a ninth century strap end and a hooked tag. It is split into two leaves at the attachment end to accommodate a strap or girdle and the terminal end is in the form of a hook. The leaves expand at the attachment end to allow for two circular rivet holes on a horizontal alignment. In plan, the sides are convex and taper in width to the hook which is turned rearwards through180°. It is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. At the front, adjace…

Cast copper alloy strap end with a terminal in the form of a king's head, simple crown, neck-length hair, turned up at end, eyes and mount clearly defined. Body of Strap end trapezoid and box like and originally backed by a separate plate. Its face is divided into three zones each of which contains an incised chevron. At its lower end was a single rivet. Traces of tinning/silvering on face. Dated to c. 135-1400 by parallel with finds from London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991, 133, No. 614)

Cast copper alloy strap end, poor condition with much loss of detail. Animal head terminal above which is a panel of decoration consisting of a central motif, the details of which are lost, surrounded by a ladder like chain of squares with central dots, The upper end of the strap end bears a palm motif and two rivet holes. One leaf of the bifurcation is missing. While it would be expected that this design would be inlaid no mention of this was made on the original record. Sheet copper alloy object, strip like, one end may have been split to receive a strap, the other end is now damaged but expanded and appears to have had two holes through it. The strip is parallel sided with a width 13.3mm, its thickness, however tapers down the length. Both faces were decorated with a ring and dot design made up of a double ring and central dot. Length 48.8mm, Width 13.2mm, Thickness 1.9mm, Mass 5.63g.

An incomplete openwork fragment possibly part of a Late, Early Medieval strap end althought it is, in comparison to other finds, unusually small and thin. This fragment is a flattish sub-rectangular piece of copper-alloy weighing 1.29g with a length of 17.5mm and thickness of 1.4mm. The maximum width is 15.17mm and the width seems to taper towards one end. The upper surface, which seems to be slightly more rounded than the flatter reverse, is decorated with a minimum of four, incised ring and dot motifs. It is interesting to note that some of the inner raised ring and central dots are…

A copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval or Medieval date. The strap end is broadly rectangular in plan with an open upper end and a rounded lower terminal. It is formed of a single outer sheet of thick copper alloy with a central void to accomodate the strap (not surviving). The front bears moulded decoration forming foliate designs. A raised moulded central motif, possible a leaf or animal head is situated in the centre. Between the foliate designs, deeps cells are present, four of which are filled with a blue glass or enamel. A slightly corroded and damaged medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end with similarities to Thomas Class B, Type 6, an 11th-century type (Thomas 2003, 6), although thought to be 12th or 13th century in date (Kevin Leahy pers. comm. 8th June 2011). The split at the attachment end is c. 13.6mm in length. A single rivet remains in situ within the two perforations, one above the other. The upper rivet has been lost following a loss to the side of the hole of the lower part of the split. The upper part of the strap-end is wedge shaped, tapering gradually in width to a central transverse r…

Copper alloy strap end. Narrow pointed strap end made from two sheets of thickness 0.5mm joined at the belt end by a rivet of diameter 1.6mm and length 3.3mm. It is uncertain how the pointed ends of the sheets were joined; perhaps by a spot of brazing. Though the form and construction is simple, it does not appear amongst numerous strap ends of medieval date reported from London, where comparable shapes were achieved by folding sheet metal. Kevin Leahy kindly notes similar strap ends to be common finds from 14th-century contexts at York. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1400. Length:…

A complete copper alloy early-medieval strap end of late 9th to 10th century date in the Carolingian style. The strap end is rectangular in plan and broadly in profile, with a deep stepped bifurcation with a separate covering plate, typical of the type. The flat plate that extends from the reverse of the strap end has two extant copper alloy rivets; the depth between the top of the strap end and the attachment plate suggets a strap of some thickness, with the rivets being 4.6mm high. The main strap end element is decorated with devolved acanthus decoration. The underside of the strap …

An almost complete cast copper alloy Early Medieval probable strap-end. The openwork lozenge shaped pendant decorated with a crude knot-works, incised using the rocker tracer technique.
