Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete early medieval decorated lead sword pommel of the 'cocked hat' type (c. 500 - 700 AD). The pommel has a shallow depression to the base which is partly filled with organic detriment due to the context of its deposition. The pommel is broadly triangular in shape with a rounded tip and two square faces at either end. The front, back and top faces are decorated with a pattern of a pair of twisting bands in relief. The pommel is in bad repair; one side has been bent out of place and a lower section of the pommel has been shorn off. A dark grey shiny patch at the top of the pommel …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy mount of Early-Medieval date. The mount is triquetra in form with a flat, rectangular profile. The upper surface is decorated with an intricate carved interlace design which retains gilding. The exact nature of the decoration is difficult to determine due to wear though an intertwining rope work-style border appears to be present around each loop and into the centre panel. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal has a mid-greenish patina and is worn. The object is 21.8mm long, 20mm wide, 1.8mm thick and weighs 2.5g. Dr Kevin Leahy, National Fin…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An elaborate quatrefoil shaped cast copper alloy harness pendant, with inlaid enamelling. Ashley believes that these elaborate harness pendants were a later development of the earlier pendants. This example displays 'arms which are allusive for England and France' (Ashley, 2002, p23). He goes on to state that such pendants are likely to have been made after 1340 'when the fleur-de-lis of France were quartered with the lions of England'. Although an earlier date cannot be ruled out, due to earlier known alliances between England and France. The pendant has four lobes, each with a small…

An Anglo-Saxon or Anglian strap end (Thomas classification Class A, Type 1). The strap end has been made from one tapering oval plate of copper alloy with a flattened end at the attachment end of the fitting. Two rivet holes would have been located at this end of the strap end, but the attachment end has been badly damaged. The other terminal of the strap end has a much stylised zoomorphic head. The head projects away from the main body of the strap end as a tapering and facetted knop. The front plate of the strap end has been decorated with a design in high relief, the object is worn…

The central motif is a tall and thin stylised fleur de lys. The inscription reads + S' AVICE MARSCAL (Seal of Avice Marshall). The M is rather unusual, looking a bit like an E on its side. is reading is rather uncertain due to the level of corrosion on the matrix and the way in which the letters have been drawn. It is a personal seal and features a name, rather than a motto. 13th century.

An incomplete cast copper alloy object, probably a chatelaine fragment of Early Medieval date. The object consists of a flattened rectangular suspension loop projecting from one end with a slightly raised circumferential collar where it meets the body of the object. An incomplete copper alloy buckle plate of 9th-century date. It is made from a single thin sheet of copper alloy, which tapers from a wider to a narrower end. Both ends are incomplete. At the wider end there are two sub-rectangular projections with a rectilinear slot in between; this may be the remains of two hinge loops to attach the plate to a frame. At the other end are two incomplete circular rivet holes. Between the rivet holes is an engraved sub-triangular shape, two sides concave and the other convex, which may be related to the 'fan-shaped' motifs found on 9th-century strap-en…

An incomplete medieval badge in the form of an axehead, dating to the period c.AD 1300-1600. The axehead is an irregular triangle in plan, which narrows to a neck, and bifurcates to form a loop which would have accomodated the haft. This loop is now broken at its apex with a worn break. Decoration comprises a grid pattern on both the front and reverse of the blade. The wings of the axehead are now missing. A light grey patina is on the surface. An incomplete stone perforated object, dating to from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age (c.9,000-1,600 BC). The stone is broadly square in plan, but tapers slightly to a terminal with a worn break. A circular concave area is present on each side just before the break, resulting in the oval cross section narrowing at the centre. This suggests that the stone has been partially perforated. One indent has a dark brown patina on some areas. The other terminal is oval in cross section and also terminates in a worn break.
