Part of a copper alloy probable harness fitting which is likely to date from the tenth or eleventh century. It consists of two components which are linked with a hinge like fitting. The two elements are identical, apart from the tiny differences because they are finished by hand. Both elements have a further hinge fitting at the other end, suggesting that they form part of a chain of links. The two links together are 52.2mm long, 8.8mm wide and 5.4mm thick. Each link is shaped like a stylised animal face. There is a loop at the top of each, which is at right angles to the rest of the …

Early medieval gilded cast copper alloy brooch with remains of iron pin fastening on the reverse. Dating from the 8th century, the mount is in fair condition with some gilding, now rather flakey, still present in the crevices of the chip-carved decoration. While the brooch appears to be lozenge-shaped this is likely to be a result of damage to its edges and it it probable that it was circular. A plain cross divides the decorated face into four equal fields, each containing a panel of deeply cut, non-zoomorphic interlace. In the centre is a circular, plain area, through which is an iro…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast object, flat on one flat side and with a prominent convex drum-shaped feature on the other, which is elsewhere flat with a median thickness of c.2.8mm. Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be a post-medieval hinge, as the lack of pin gear and drum shaped feature disqualify it from being an Early Anglo-Saxon brooch. The form resembles that of a small and mutilated long brooch, though there is no trace of pin gear and the drum in position of 'bow' is at right angles to what would be expected, and is solid. Traces of gilding remain on one side of…

Part of the circumference survives along with panels of single-strand, non-zoomorphic, interlace and part of a volute-shaped element. This object is truncated but the curvature of the surviving edge suggests an original diameter of c. 30.0mm. It is likely that the plain, but gilded, circular area with a central hole was one of four such elements, a feature appears on the Witham pins (Wilson, 1964, pl.XVIII, No. 19).The style is similar to SUR-BD3980 and NLM-028751. …
