Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably Medieval iron axehead dating from AD 1100 - 1500. The socket is incomplete, with one face missing. The cutting edge is convex, or this may be a broken end. It is wider than the rest of the blade, which tapers smoothly to the socket. The sides of the socket are shaped into a point so the socket is taller than the neck of the blade. It is covered with corrosion. Weight is 1470g, Length 262mm, Width 98mm and Thickness 28mm. Dr Kevin Leahy looked for parallels to the shape in books by Manning on Roman iron, Goodhall on Medieval ironworkand Salman on recent tools, and sugg…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast, copper alloy zoomorphic mount of probable Medieval date. The object takes the form of the head of some type of beast, possibly a dolphin, dragon or sea monster. The features comprise a broad nose, two eyes each made from ring and dot, two pointed projecting ears and curved incised eyebrows. The back of the head is flat with a large protrusion extending vertically from the back of the head which may possibly be a crest or fin. The projection is decorated with incised lines; one central and vertical and others forming a border. The back of the object and the base are both flat, …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy circular mount, which is medieval or post medieval. The mount is a disc which is 40.2mm in diameter with a flat topped circular projection in the centre, making the whole look rather like a wide brimmed hat. It is decorated with irregularly spaced ring and dot motifs round the edge. There are also three evenly spaced circular rivet holes at the edge, one of which has torn through to the edge of the mount. The reverse of the projection is hollow and rough. The upper surface is dark grey and glossy, suggesting that the mount may have had a white metal coating. There are a…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Medieval penannular brooch dating from about AD 1000-1400 and of a type from the Finno-Ugrian areas of Russia. The brooch has a wire loop of 25.2mm diameter. The wire is sub-circular in section and is 2.2mm diameter. The terminals of the penannular hoop are long flat triangular plates, made in one with the hoop. They are decorated along the outer edge of each terminal with an incised zig-zag line and have a circular hole of about 1.8mm diameter in the rounded outer corner. A fainter, shallow but wide incised line is positional in the centre of each straight, inner ed…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two parts of a copper alloy object, a Medieval buckle dating from AD 1250 - 1450. About half of the hoop survives in two pieces. It is a rounded rectangle in section, expanding slightly in width at one end. This projection would have been part of a projecting pin rest and is thinner than the hoop of the frame. The hoop is decorated on the surviving side by expanding the width of the hoop into three openwork lobes, so there are three rings along the side of the hoop. The break between the two surviving pieces is across the upmost ring. The breaks are very worn and patinated. The top of…

A copper alloy probable annular brooch of medieval date, probable about AD 1200 - 1400. The brooch is incomplete with part of the frame missing, including the presumed constriction for the pin. The frame is oval in plan and rectangular in section. The front face is decorated with incised symbols, perhaps intended to be letters, but none are clearly identifiable as Roman or lombardic letters. It is perhaps an inscription rendered by an illiterate maker. If the inscription is in blackletter, the lines are outlineing letters rather than forming letters themselves, but the legend still ap…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy zoomorphic mount probably dating from AD 1000 - 1200. The mount is in the form of a three dimensional beast's head with rounded ears, worn eyes and a tall nose or snout. There is a fleur shaped projection at the snout end. The projection is flat and may represent the animal's tongue. There is a circular rivet hole (now filled with corrosion) through the projection. Another similar rivet holes can be seen in the centre of the creature's head. Beyond the ears, the mount is thin and flat, curving slightly backwards. It is not clear whether this is the whole mount or whethe…

A circular copper alloy mount probably dating from the medieval period. The mount is 24.2mm long, 23.5mm wide and 2.7mm thick. It is decorated on one face with what can be interpreted as a horse and rider in relief, with the background being obscured by thick light brown corrosion. This may be the remains of enamelling or another decorative finish. There is a circular rivet hole at the bottom of the mount, between the horse’s legs. The reverse is plain. The metal has a patchy light green patina. It has not been possible to find a close parallel, but the condition of the metal and the…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy penannular loop which is probably a broken buckle or possibly a very unusual finger ring. The ring has sub-lozenge shaped thick terminals but the loop is thin and angled. It flares from the terminals to 9.8mm wide in the middle. The outer surface of the loop is pitted, though the inner surface is in better condition. The patina has been recently destroyed. There is a projection from one terminal knop which could be the remains of a bar to which the pin would have been attached if the object was a buckle. There is no evidence for a pin rest. No decoration survives, if the…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unusual copper alloy strap fitting, probably related to horse harness wear. The fitting has a circular frame with a large rectangular loop attached to this and hanging below. The circular frame has two raised decorative knuckle shaped elements – one on each side so that they are opposite each other, and divide the frame into two. Each of these appears to have once (possibly) held enamel decoration. The ring-shaped frame on one side is of semi-circular section and has two small circular indentations (that may have contained decorative enamel); one below each ‘knuckle’ shape, w…
