A cast copper alloy and iron Roman folding knife; the cast copper-alloy handle depicts a nude standing figure, possibly female. The handle is sub-rectangular and openwork. An iron blade has corroded in its folded position within a slot in the handle. The blade is hinged on an iron rivet at the base of the handle which is a pedestal. Corrosion product has spread from the rivet across much of the pedestal. The remnant of the blade, as well as the length of the slot, implies that the blade would have been a minimum of c. 63mm long. The handle has a mid-grey/green incomplete patina with s…

An incomplete probable silver-gilt Thealby brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch is comprised of rectangular wings the reverse of which act as a double lug hinge mechanism for the pin. The pin no longer remains and patches of copper corrosion mark the remains of the axis bar within the lugs. An integral circular attachment loop projects from a rectangular bar set centrally on the upper edge of the head. The bar is decorated with parallel though unevenly spaced vertical grooves and the loop has moulded decoration to the front face. The front to the wings have concaved central se…

An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy pin, probably a hair pin (c. AD 150-c. 250). The head (terminal) is circular in cross-section and the top is low conical in form. The sides of the head taper from the top to the base where there is a minor collar. The head is divided by a circumferential groove about two thirds of the way down from the top. Above the groove it is cross-hatched and below the groove it is plain. The plain shaft is circular in cross-section and tapers from the top to an abraded break. The uneven light green surface of this pin has slight corrosion with traces o…

Copper alloy pin. Cast slightly tapering pin of round section with a flat openwork head with engrailed edges and a balanced curvilinear composition, possibly abstracted from the popular motif of a hand grasping a fruit or pearl. On one side - the better preserved - a collar is provided at the base of the head by a horizontal series of tiny and closely spaced punched dots of diameter c.0.5mm; similar dots also form a border motif for the open parts of the head, probably on both sides. The shank is bent through 90 degrees at its mid point, a feature of hair pins sometimes thought to rel…

Copper alloy and iron balance fragment. Central beam and one hinged arm from a tiny balance. The arm has a bulbous end, perhaps to permit tied attachment of a pan. A separate pin of diameter 1.5mm and length 3.8mm joins arm and beam. Ferrous corrosion at the centre of the beam suggests provision for the suspension of the set of scales. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be of Roman date, though no other material of that date was reported with it. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 27.9mm, Width: 6.7mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 2.12gms.

A Roman iron knife blade and a cast copper alloy scabbard fitting, found together. The knife measures 125mm in length, 16.5mm in width and 6mm in thickness and it weighs 33.24g. The scabbard fitting, which came from the top of the sheath measures 35mm x 11.5mm x 8mm and the metal is c. 1.2mm thick. It weighs 10.07g. This type of knife is long-lived, but the scabbard mount probably dates from the earlier Roman period, that is the 1st or 2nd century AD. The knife was tanged with a probably symmetrical, leaf-shaped blade and a tang that the wooden handle was mounted on. Remains of the…

An iron whittle tanged knife of Roman to Medieval date. The blade measures 93.02mm in length and the tang 13.17mm in length. The tang is incomplete. Each edge is slightly curved with the cutting edge measuring 1.28mm thick and the opposite edge measuring 2.07mm. The knife terminates with a rounded point. The surfaces of the object are uneven due to corrosion. It is mid-brown in colour. The form is of Manning's Roman Type 16, which he says is a long-live type. The form would also be quite acceptable in the Early Medieval period (Drinkall type A) and there are good parallels in Cowgi…

Roman enamel decorated cast copper alloy plate brooch. It has been somewhat abraded and the fastening is missing. It is decorated in enamel with a sunburst or flower or star like motif on a field of enamel that now appears red. The enamel of the body of the star has survived its ageing to look dark blue while the circular arms now look dark green. Closely resembles Hattatt type 118 (cf Hattatt, R, 1982. Ancient and Romano-British Brooches Sherborne, pp137-8, pl58). Dates between AD c50 and c250 but most likely second century (AD 100 to 200) in date. The diameter is 23mm, and the wei…

Cast copper unidentified object, possibly a Roman mirror handle dating from c. AD43-410. It is in very good condition without any corrisive products present on the surface. It is straight, with a circular cross-section and one forked end. There are very small rivet holes in the two sides of the fork, probably for attaching it to the actual mirror plate which would have also been made from copper-alloy, but highly polished. The handle is decorated with a simple egg-and-reel motif/mouldings.
