Object type: FLAKED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped lithic axehead of Neolithic date (c.4000 BC - 2200 BC). The axehead is broken and may have been reused as a scraper. When complete the object would have been ovate in both plan and section though around half of the axehead is now missing due to a transverse break. The axehead has been bifacially flaked using covering scaled low angle flaking. Short scaled semi-abrupt retouch is visible along the distal edge suggesting the object may have been repurposed as a scraper after breaking. The flint is an off-white patchy colour. The implement is 56.6mm long, 53mm wid…

It is formed from a tertiary flake which is rectangular in both plan and section. The ventral surface is smooth with faint ripples of percussion. The distal surface has had three long flakes removed and displays abrupt, short, sub-parallel flaking to the left edge mesial portion. The flint is a light orange-brown colour. The implement …
