Object type: CARVED STONE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large piece of possible exotic worked stone, of uncertain date and function. It feels to be lighter than if it was made of metal, and heavier than if it was ceramic. It is dark grey / black and very fine grained with rounded (vitrified?) inclusions which have a lustrous silver shine. The matrix is hard and irregular, but can be crushed with a thumbnail. The piece is curved in one plane only. The outer face of the curve is pitted and has a groove across it. The inner face is much smoother though it still has rounded bobbles visible. The broken edges appear black in colour, but have s…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy probable mount or strap distributer, probably Post Medieval in date. It is sub-rectangular in shape with florid scrolls and ornate decoration. The decorative grooves have a black substance in them. There is a possible zoomorphic face at one end where there appears to be a broken loop. The other end also appears broken. It is likely that there was another loop at this end, allowing the object to function as a link between two straps. There is no other obvious method of attaching the mount. The metal is poor quality and corroded. The black finish is often found on seventee…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy possible weight of Post Medieval date. The object is circular in plan and has convex sides. One face is dished and is marked with scratches radiating from the centre. The opposite face has similar scratches, but more of them, and has three concavities with a raised rim and a higher point in the centre. The scratches may be caused by rodent gnawing, but they are probably not random enough for this. The object has a well developed white patina with patches of dark brown. At almost half an ounce in mass (14.04g.), it may have been intended as a 1/2oz weight. It could also ha…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy circular mount, which is medieval or post medieval. The mount is a disc which is 40.2mm in diameter with a flat topped circular projection in the centre, making the whole look rather like a wide brimmed hat. It is decorated with irregularly spaced ring and dot motifs round the edge. There are also three evenly spaced circular rivet holes at the edge, one of which has torn through to the edge of the mount. The reverse of the projection is hollow and rough. The upper surface is dark grey and glossy, suggesting that the mount may have had a white metal coating. There are a…

A circular copper alloy mount probably dating from the medieval period. The mount is 24.2mm long, 23.5mm wide and 2.7mm thick. It is decorated on one face with what can be interpreted as a horse and rider in relief, with the background being obscured by thick light brown corrosion. This may be the remains of enamelling or another decorative finish. There is a circular rivet hole at the bottom of the mount, between the horse’s legs. The reverse is plain. The metal has a patchy light green patina. It has not been possible to find a close parallel, but the condition of the metal and the…

A cast, copper alloy zoomorphic mount of probable Medieval date. The object takes the form of the head of some type of beast, possibly a dolphin, dragon or sea monster. The features comprise a broad nose, two eyes each made from ring and dot, two pointed projecting ears and curved incised eyebrows. The back of the head is flat with a large protrusion extending vertically from the back of the head which may possibly be a crest or fin. The projection is decorated with incised lines; one central and vertical and others forming a border. The back of the object and the base are both flat, …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two parts of a copper alloy object, a Medieval buckle dating from AD 1250 - 1450. About half of the hoop survives in two pieces. It is a rounded rectangle in section, expanding slightly in width at one end. This projection would have been part of a projecting pin rest and is thinner than the hoop of the frame. The hoop is decorated on the surviving side by expanding the width of the hoop into three openwork lobes, so there are three rings along the side of the hoop. The break between the two surviving pieces is across the upmost ring. The breaks are very worn and patinated. The top of…

Part of a copper-alloy finger-ring of early to middle Early-Medieval date. The ring has a circular bezel which is nearly flat. It is decorated with four pairs of curved incised grooves, one by each shoulder and one to top and bottom. These form a central lozenge, in which is an incised cross, with an annulet in each angle. The whole is in a incised circular border. The hoop is narrow and the outer face is bevelled. Only a short part of it survives, projecting from one shoulder. The shoulders are each decorated with three pellets forming a sub-triangular knop projecting from the angle …

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy strap-end dating to the 8th century and of Anglo-Carolingian origin. The strap-end is rectangular shaped and measures 30mm in length and 23mm in width. At one end of the strap-end there are three circular perforations (measuring 4mm in diameter)in a horizontal row for rivets to attach to the strap or belt. At this end of the object, the copper alloy is a thin sheet (on top of which another plate may have been attached) it then becomes thicker (4.5mm) to allow for the decorated part of the strap-end. This consists of deeply cut decoration, likely to be zoomorphic, alth…

Copper alloy strap-end with intricate decoration on both front and reverse. The split attachment end is cut straight across, and has a complete copper-alloy rivet in each corner. In the centre of the attachment end, there is a small sunken rectangular field with relief interlace which differs slightly on each face. Below this, the strap-end steps down to a slimmer cross-section, and is decorated with a very slightly tapering long rectangular sunken field filled with relief interlace. As above, each face has a slightly different interlace design. The next part of the strap-end widens s…

A copper alloy mount dating from the Early Medieval period. The mount is a disc with a raised rim and is decorated with five "watch spring" bosses. These are spaced evenly round a central setting which is now empty. Each boss is a pointed dome in deep relief, decorated with three spiral grooves. At the base of the domes, these grooves fork and expand forming trumpet shaped areas between them on the flat disc. The central setting is circular and deep but is completely empty. It may have originally contained blue cabochon glass or amber. Four copper alloy rivets are untidily positioned …

A fragment of an Early Medieval mount from the apex disc on an Anglo-Saxon shield boss, dating from the 6th century. The fragment is a flat piece of copper alloy with one edge which looks to be almost complete and which is curved. The other edges are breaks and are patinated. The front face is decorated with Salin Style I. There is a double incised line border along the curved edge, then an inner border of ropework like design. The main field is filled with a clearly defined animal leg, several bands of triple stranded ornament and other elements which are less clear. Interrupting the…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy probable Early Medieval hanging bowl escutcheon of unusual form. The object is a pointed oval plate of metal, one side of which continues as if to form a circular frame, with the oval against the edge, but the frame only survives for a few millimetres. The frame edge is triangular in section, bevelled on the inside edge. The oval plate is thinner than the frame, recessed on the reverse. The edge of the plate appears to be complete. Projecting from the frame in the centre of the side of the oval is a sub-square sectioned bar which bends backwards and slightly to the side…
