A copper-alloy Medieval annular brooch dating to the period c.AD 1200-1300. The brooch is broadly ovate in plan, with a rectangular cross-section. A zoomorphic head projects from the middle point of each long edge, and curves around to point inwards. It is likely that these represent snakes. The reverse is undecorated, although has a constriction at each apex to acommodate the pin, which is now missing. A green-brown patina is on the surface, as well as traces of gilding. The brooch measures 32.28mm in length, 23.07mm in width, 4.01mm in thickness and weighs 5.77g. Cf. Salis…

One face of the object has narrower scars from blade removal while on the opposite face wider blades have been removed down the length of the core with shorter narrower blades removed from above (towards the striking platform) at a diagonal angle to the lower removals. The removed flints appear to have been blades. There is no visible sign of platform dressing. A strip of light cream cortex remains along the length of one side of the core…

Copper alloy die stamp. Cast rectangular plate with rounded edges and with deeply incised detail on one flat side. A doubled groove forms the frame for angular interlaced figures of Salin Style 1. The central components of the motif bear transverse grooves suggesting a vermiform or possibly billeted texture, while some straight members ancillary to these and outside them, but confined within the frame, have a feathered surface texture. The front is chip carved and has a double raised line border containing raised triangles all forming recesses for decoration, possibly champlevé enamel and silver wire. The rear face is flat and plain. This object has a green patina and the breaks are old. The mount resembles the axe-shaped mounts on the underside of the Lullingstone hangi…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wakefield

A lead alloy weight dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 800 - 1100. The weight is hexagonal in plan with a flat base and sides that taper slightly inwards towards the top. Three sides are longer than the other three sides, arranged alternately. The top is inset with a decorative copper alloy plate that is also hexagonal but with concave sides. The central motif on the plate is an equilateral triangle with concave sides, each of the three apices of the triangle terminating in a crescent with the points facing outwards to create three sides of the hexagon. Each of the concav…

Object type: DIE STAMP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An early medieval cast copper alloy pressblech die, probably dating from the 7th/8th century AD. The die is complete and in fair condition. While both the rim and the reverse are smooth and in very good condition, the obverse surface is rough and very worn. The decoration, however, is still visible. The decoration appears to be random and not wholly geometric, probably Irish in origin: it is composed of a complicated pattern of swirls, triskeles and waves in interlace style. The only symmetrical part of the pattern is the centre which depicts two three-armed pattern set on top of each…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Head of a copper alloy 8th century Anglo-Saxon pin, probably part of a triple, or double, pin set. The head and part of the shank survive in very good condition with hardly any corrosion or bronze disease present on the surface, except in the centre of the obverse where corrosion started in the crevices of the decoration. It was made from cast copper alloy, probably with part-incised decoration on the obverse. The silvery shine on the reverse strongly suggests that the pin had been silvered or tinned. There is a small hole in the side of the head, possibly to link the pin to the centr…

A fragment of stone, which has divided specialist opinion. It is not possible to confirm that this piece of stone is definitely an artefact and at least one specialist considers it to be a water smoothed pebble of igneous stone, possible glacial erratic pebble from boulder clay deposits, that has a plough struck spall removed from one side. Other specialists feel that this could possibly have been an axehead, probably dating to 2000-1500BC. Alternatively speculation as to whether it is a Palaeolithic handaxe has been muted. Both suggestions agree that it is not possible to determine t…

An incomplete Neolithic flint implement (4000 BC-2351 BC). This implement is sub-rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in cross-section throughout its length. This implement, including the break, has an off-white and grey patina with numerous flecks of iron staining. Length: 104.0mm; width: 36.1mm; thickness: 25.7mm. Weight: 113.27g. The objec…

Leaf-shaped Neolithic flint knife or oval side scraper dating from c. 3000-2100BC. This object appears to have been bifacially flaked suggesting that it is a knife. However, we do not have a side view for this object (only two images were provided by the finder) so we cannot be certain. It looks to have pressure flaking on dorsal side. It was probably formed on tertiary debitage rather than a deliberate stuck core.
