Copper alloy mount fragment. Small thin fragment, possibly from a mount of cross-shaped form with concave sides to its arms, retaining interlace strap-work with relict gilding on one side, with plain borders, one lightly convex and the other concave. Lightly bent, broken along one edge. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'I think that this piece represents a fragment decorated in what the Staffordshire Hoard report called the 'Early Insular Style' which was dated to c. 630-660. The matting-link interlace formed from three strands is characteristic of what was, in the Staffs. Hoar…

This is concave on the reverse, creating a depression approximately 14mm deep. The centre of the mount is formed into the head of a beast, possibly a mastiff type dog or bear, but also possibly reminiscent of the semi-feline beasts seen on Borre metalwork. A copper-alloy gilded mount of Early Medieval date. The mount is oval in plan and rectangular in cross section. The mount has raised decoration consisting of a raised triangle located in between a V with curved tips. Below is what appears to be a depiction of a paw. The decoration is abraded in places. The bottom of the mount appears to possibly be incomplete with an abraded edge, a small fragment of the right side of the mount is missing. The reverse is flat and undecorated, evidence of solder is visible on the reverse. The mount is 16.85mm in length, 23.2mm wide, 2.35mm thick and…

A circular copper alloy mount or possible pendant ornament of possible Early Early-Medieval date (c.500-750), with an openwork triskele design at the centre, each arm supported by a narrow projection from the surround. At the cetre of the triskele is a small circular depression. The object measures 64mm in diameter and varies in thickness between 0.8mm and 1.2mm, being thickest at the centre and thinning towards the edges, which are slightly convex from the front and concave from the back. It weighs 20.6g. To the reverse there are no signs of attachment. Kevin Leahy and Helen Geak…

Lead or lead alloy mount, probably fairly modern 1800 to 1900AD, in the shape of a knight on a horse (the knight's head has come off & it looks like something may have come adrift under the horses hooves). It appears to have been mounted using a central stud. It measures 120mm long and 78mm wide. There is a copper alloy mount of similar subject on the PAS, BH-B91E31, but it has been attached at multiple points. It is worth noting that there were Pilgrim badges with a similar subject (possibly George & the Dragon)and made of the similar material (lead or lead alloy). There appears to b…

An incomplete Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy mount, triangular in shape and flat in profile, decorated with a gilded triple-strand interlace pattern and on an iron backing. There is evidence of perforation near the pointed end of the mount, and a possible lug near the wide end. The mount is in good condition but the reverse is covered in iron corrosion products. The mount is 32.7 mm long, 50.99 mm wide, 6.92 mm thick and weighs 21.71 g. Kevin Leahy suggests that this a piece of Pressblech foil, attached to iron. He suspects that, given the iron, that it is a vandyke from a bucket, still …

An incomplete copper-alloy mount of probable post-Medieval date. The mount comprises a damaged rectangular plate with a transverse, convex-surfaced moulding at the centre of the upper face. This moulding divides two equal-sized panels, each of which is filled with an interlace pattern (similar, but not symmetrical) of possible vegetal or zoomorphic nature. The raised areas of this design are decorated with a series of parallel grooves, most of which are aligned at 90 degrees to the moulding and have been filled with an unidentified substance. Traces of this yellowish material (possi…

Copper alloy Mount. Cast rectangular plate with three rivet holes at one end; two occupied by rivets of diameter 1.8mm which are clenched over at the back of the plate; the central hole appears countersunk, of diameter 2mm, and perhaps was never used. The mid point of the plate is ridged, and its other end is also thickened with a gutter adjacent to this on the back. Decoration comprises incised triangles either side of the central ridge, filled with groups of two or three round or oval punchmarks. An identification as a fragment from scale armour was offered by the finder, on the …
