An incomplete Middle Iron Age copper alloy brooch, dating to c. 250-100 BC. Adams, 2013, Type 2Ba3. The pin is missing. The brooch has three sub-oval cone-shaped hollow bosses in a line, creating a scalloped edge on each side. Each boss has a setting in the apex for coral or enamel, now missing. At each end of the brooch is a transverse collar and an elongated knop similar to an acorn shape which extends from the base of the cone. The cones thus are raised up from the ends. Below one knop is a sub-triangular pierced double lug which would have held a hinged pin, and below the other, …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain function, possibly a brooch dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1000-1200). The object is disc-shaped with a raised hemispherical central boss. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded circular and geometric pattern. The four concentric ring and dot motifs, one roughly in each quarter of the plate, consist of a single grooved circle, another circle within it and a circular dot at the centre. The zones between the two circular grooves are flat and plan. Around the base of the central boss is a border consisting of small and slig…

Cast gilded silver miniature square-headed brooch. The head bears a central motif of three nested rectangles enclosing a horizontal rib, with an outer border of closely juxtaposed stamped circles of diameter 1mm. A curved bow springs from the innermost of the nested rectangles, and has a central longitudinal rib flanked by paired grooves. A U-shaped lug on the back retains the corroded stub of an iron pin. The central rib continues to form the longer shaft of a voided cross potent set centrally in a rectilinear mid-bow expansion with its outer angles curved. There are three small curv…

Terminal from a late Early Medieval copper alloy penannular brooch, probably Irish and of 9th century date. The terminal is flat, triangular, and is rectangular in section. Although all three sides have patches of corrosion, the original wall can be seen thus demonstrating this is a terminal. The left and right perimeters of the terminal are decorated with four incised straight lines. A straight incised line is located from the centre of the terminal and travels to the outer edge. Three diagonally incised lines extend downwards from the central line on either side, thus forming an abs…

A copper-alloy Medieval annular brooch dating to the period c.AD 1200-1300. The brooch is broadly ovate in plan, with a rectangular cross-section. A zoomorphic head projects from the middle point of each long edge, and curves around to point inwards. It is likely that these represent snakes. The reverse is undecorated, although has a constriction at each apex to acommodate the pin, which is now missing. A green-brown patina is on the surface, as well as traces of gilding. The brooch measures 32.28mm in length, 23.07mm in width, 4.01mm in thickness and weighs 5.77g. Cf. Salis…

An almost complete copper alloy brooch of Early Medieval date, late 8th-9th century. The brooch is circular in plan and flat with zoomorphic and openwork decoration. The brooch is decorated with a central 'kite-shaped' cross, the terminals of which are rounded, expanding out over the edge of the circumference of the plate. An Early Medieval copper-alloy Cross Brooch. The brooch was original cross-shaped, but two of the arms are now incomplete. Each arm is sub-rectangular in plan, being slightly wider at the terminal than at the centre of the cross. The perimeter is decorated by a single linear groove. One arm contains three irregularly places diagonal grooves or 'dashes'. The other arm only contains two. In the centre of the brooch are four ringed dot motifs. These are roughly arranged one at the beginning of each arm, but they are somewhat crudely done. An integral loop is located behind one of the arm…

A copper alloy probable annular brooch of medieval date, probable about AD 1200 - 1400. The brooch is incomplete with part of the frame missing, including the presumed constriction for the pin. The frame is oval in plan and rectangular in section. The front face is decorated with incised symbols, perhaps intended to be letters, but none are clearly identifiable as Roman or lombardic letters. It is perhaps an inscription rendered by an illiterate maker. If the inscription is in blackletter, the lines are outlineing letters rather than forming letters themselves, but the legend still ap…

Early medieval gilded cast copper alloy brooch with remains of iron pin fastening on the reverse. Dating from the 8th century, the mount is in fair condition with some gilding, now rather flakey, still present in the crevices of the chip-carved decoration. While the brooch appears to be lozenge-shaped this is likely to be a result of damage to its edges and it it probable that it was circular. A plain cross divides the decorated face into four equal fields, each containing a panel of deeply cut, non-zoomorphic interlace. In the centre is a circular, plain area, through which is an iro…

An incomplete gilded copper alloy early medieval strip brooch dating to the period c. AD 700 - 800. The pin and part of the plate are missing. The plate is decorated with an incised pattern, possibly a coiled zoomorphic beast within two concentric lozengiform ridges. The obverse of the plate retains a substantial amount of gilding. There is an oval perforation of unknown function just below the body of the coiled beast. The plate h…
