A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (circa 4000-2350BC). The implement is most likely a knife, although could be a small Neolithic hand-axe shaped implement known as an 'Ovate' dating to the Late Neolithic (3000-2350BC). However, the implement is not bifacially worked to the extent expected of an Ovate.
The implement appears to have been knapped from a primary flake, from which secondary and tertiary flakes have been removed from the ventral surface. The Dorsal face has been worked to remove cortex on the left medial edge, leaving a substantial amount on the right…

Cast slightly tapering pin of round section with a flat openwork head with engrailed edges and a balanced curvilinear composition, possibly abstracted from the popular motif of a hand grasping a fruit or pearl. On one side - the better preserved - a collar is provided at the base of the head by a horizontal series of tiny and closely spaced punched dots of diameter c.0.5mm; similar dots also form a border motif for the open parts of the head, probably on both sides. The shank is bent through 90 degrees at its mid point, a feature of hair pins sometimes thought to rel…

An Early Early-Medieval (Anglo Saxon, c.450-550) near-complete copper-alloy mount, possibly for furniture or a strap, with (now red) enamel decoration. The edge is cracked in one place and bent upwards a little. There are two holes in the plate, and the central rivet hole (2.85mm in diameter) has traces of iron corrosion inside it. The finder reports that there was a small amount of iron on the reverse that came off in his hand when he lifted it out of the ground.
At the centre of the plate, around the rivet hole, is a hexagon. Inside is a sexfoil and the resultant triangles all …

A lead pad or trial piece from a die stamp of early Anglo-Saxon (7th century) date. The object is flat and sub-rectangular with rounded corners, and has a worn break to one end. A shallow impression has been made on one side, almost certainly by a die stamp for making impressed foil mounts. The decoration is in Salin's Style II, framed within a tapering sub-rectangular border and with rounded lobes at the surviving end. Each lobe is filled with the curl of the beak of a predatory bird with pointed-oval eyes and no headframe. Interlace is present between the beaks. Beneath the birds' h…
