A very worn medieval Penny. Alaistair Wardle kindly identifies this as an issue of Edward III (1327-1377). Only a crowned bust is visible on the obverse and the reverse has a quatrefoil in the centre of the long cross. The quatrefoil in the centre of the reverse would point to it being from the York Archiepiscopal mint.

Incomplete cast copper-alloy mount of uncertain use of probable later Early Medieval date (c.1000-1200 AD). The item is a tapering triangular shape with a zoomorphic terminus at one end and a flat edge at the other where the item has probably been broken in antiquity. A body sherd from the shoulder of an Early Medieval, Early Anglo Saxon pottery vessel with stamp decoration. The dark brown fabric has about twenty percent poorly sorted sub-rounded quartz grain filler. Two stamp dies have been used, a plain die and a complete whorl design. There are also two incised circumferencial lines below the stamps. As decorated pottery is rare on settlement sites, it is possible that this sherd came from an urn.

A complete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon strap end. The strap end is now curved along its long axis and the surface is badly eroded leaving the decoration standing proud. The front of the strap end is divided into panels with the main field being masked by two overlapping curves filled with billeted pattern. The strap end terminates with a devolved animal head and on the upper attachment end are two rivet holes. The lower edge of the reverse bears traces of iron corrosion. The length is 38.3mm, the width is 8.6mm, the thickness is 1.4mm and the weight is 2.58g.

Early medieval mount; cast copper alloy triangular mount with inscribed decoration and gilding over all surfaces. The mount is of the Anglo-Saxon tradition and is most likely to be of 7th century date. It is sub-triangular in shape with a narrow strip extending up from the apex of the triangle. A lead alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch which is broken with two large fragments surviving and other parts missing. The brooch has a rectangular head with a raised central panel. Moulded terminals project upwards and to the sides. These consist of a central zoomorphic lobe with moulded eyes and a projecting snout with a projecting scroll on each side. Medieval water tap; Large, cast copper alloy water spout in an elaborate housing. The tap is of probable 13th or 14th century date. The lower housing is in the form of a human head and there is a long stem coming out of the top of the head. The stem curls over and has a beast’s head at its terminal. There is a circular hole in the mouth of the beast and a corresponding hole in the back, at the base of the neck of the human head. An incomplete cast copper alloy unidentified Medieval object. The object is in the form of a plate shaped like three conjoined triangles, the tip of one being missing. The remaining tips have small double bosses on their upper surfaces. Between the triangles are integral circular loops. The face of the plate bears a series of crudely cut crossing lines. On the back of the plate is an integrally cast central boss (length 4.3mm), the top of which has been expanded to fit it to another object. The length is 42.9mm, the width is 58.8mm, the thickness is 3.0mm and the weight is 24.87g.

An interesting complete lead alloy object of a modern date. The object is in the form of two intertwined human figures, which were cast separately. The larger figure has one arm around the other’s waist; the other arm is bent around and raised to the face of its partner. The smaller figure has one arm around the waist of her partner and the other on his shoulders. Each of the figures has long, tendril-like legs, which are interlaced. The length of the object is 40.1mm, the width is 15.2mm, the thickness is 14.4mm and the weight is 32.29g.

Probably a cast lead disc pendant, of Post Medieval date. The circular disc is blank on the reverse except for a narrow incised transverse line. The front face is decorated in relief with a pseudo-nummular design. In the centre is an asymmetrical cross-potent with a central boss. In the arms of the cross are four heart-shaped devices made up of two strands. Around the edge of the disc is a fictitious inscription. A hole has been drilled through the disc leaving a burr on both sides. The diameter of the disc is 25.4mm, the thickness is 2.3mm and the weight is 18.33g.

An almost complete cast copper alloy Medieval buckle and plate. The single loop oval buckle frame has an expanded outer edge with a pin rest and a narrowed and offset strap bar. Looped around the strap bar is a cast copper alloy pin. The rectangular copper alloy buckle plate is folded and recessed for the strap bar and has a slot for the pin. The plate has four of the five remaining copper alloy rivets. The back of the plate is lozenge shaped and between the plates is a surviving fragment of leather. The length is 44.9mm, the width is 24.3mm and the weight is 9.14g.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman headstud brooch. Behind the rectangular head are the remains of a hinged pin mechanism with a copper alloy axis bar and the remains of a copper alloy pin. The sides of the wings are stepped and decorated with blue enamel, most of which still survives. The bow is truncated at a semicircular point, which may have been where the headstud was housed. The surviving length is 13.3mm, the width is 16.0mm and the weight is 3.57g.

The face has incised decoration in the form of a St Andrew's cross executed with rocker arm decoration. Some traces of gilding survive around the cross. The surviving length is 28.4mm, the surviving with is 28.6mm, the thickness is 1.2mm and the weight is 5.44g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age ring-headed pin of ‘swan’s neck type’. The ring head has an external diameter of 13.7mm and a rounded outer edge. The hole though the centre of the head has a diameter of 4.1mm and has an ‘hourglass’ form. The integral pin shaft is attached to the ring at a tangent and curves around a 5mm radius before straightening to form the 3.2mm diameter pin shaft. The end of the shaft is broken and shows some signs of bronze disease. The surviving length is 34.8mm, the thickness is 5.0mm and the weight is 5.87g.

A complete cast copper alloy Bronze Age Quoit headed pin. The ring is oval but is slightly pointed where it joins the circular-sectioned pin shaft. It has an ‘H’ section which measures c. 5.0mm x 2.3mm and blends smoothly into the pin. This ‘H’ section appears to have been formed by hammering the edges of the ring section to raise them into the flanges. These flanges are decorated with notches on both sides of the ring. The slightly bent shaft is now about 45° off the plain of the ring. The length is 144.0mm, the diameter of the ring is 66.1mm x 60.0mm and the weight is 29.11g.

The slightly curved undecorated leaf-shaped body narrows from the neck that has two kidney shaped holes suggesting amphora handles. The terminal of the body is now missing. At the top of the strap end are two integral perforated lugs representing a hinge type attachment. Through the centre of these are the remains of an iron pin. The surviving length is 54.1mm, the width is 18.8mm, the thickness of the body is 1.9mm and the thickness of the lugs is 7.7mm.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Post Medieval double loop buckle frame. The two asymmetrical conjoined frames include a D-shaped loop with two knops and a rectangular loop a small knop at each end and four mouldings. The strap bar is narrowed with a knop on both ends and has traces of iron corrosion from the missing pin. The surface of the frame is silvery which suggests that it has been tinned. The length is 23.7mm, the width is 18.8mm, the thickness is 2.6mm and the weight is 29.7mm.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval Strap Slider. The rectangular frame has a central boss on the top bar bearing pinecone decoration, the underside of which is hollow. Either end of the top bar is a small knop. The other three sides of the frame are plain except for the lower one, which has two rivet holes. Through one of the holes is an internal circular-headed copper alloy rivet with a length of 3.6mm. The length of the frame is 21.8mm, the width is 27.7mm, the maximum thickness is 6.3mm and the weight is 4.69g.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Medieval buckle. The fragment comes from the outside edge of square frame and is surmounted by a knop bearing a human face over which is a leaf-motif. The surviving fraction of the side of the frame shows it to have angled, raising the buckle bar above the level of the outside edge. The surviving length is 19.7mm, the surviving width is 15.8mm, the thickness is 2.4mm and the weight is 2.89g.

An incomplete copper alloy Medieval buckle and plate. The cast D-shaped frame has a central expended area for the pin notch. Looped around the offset strap bar is a sheet copper alloy pin. The incomplete simple folded plate, was probably originally D-shaped and is recessed for the frame and has a slot for the pin. In the centre is a single copper alloy rivet. The surviving length is 25.1mm, the width is 23.9mm, the thickness is 2.6mm and the weight is 3.47g.

A complete cast copper alloy Medieval thimble. The dome-shaped thimble has an unthickened rim and the sides have large hand punched circular indentations in horizontal rows. The slightly rounded top has three concentric circles of the same indentations and the centre is plain. A hole has worn through a section at the junction between the top and sidewall. The maximum diameter of the rim is 21.6mm, the diameter at the top of the side is 15.9mm, the length is 21.6mm and the weight is 6.64g.

A complete cast copper alloy Medieval seal matrix. The hexagonal conical handle a pointed topped attachment loop with a double moulded collar. The circular matrix has a simple device of two upper case letters; a D and probably an O, the latter having two faint cross bars. Above and below the letters are pairs of leaves and a line representing a twig links the upper leaves. The diameter of the seal is 16.2mm, the length is 19.3mm and the weight is 6.11g.

Gilt cast copper alloy decorative mount of early medieval (Irish) date (650-850 AD). The mount is incomplete approximately a quarter survives. Originally, it was circular with a diameter of around 49mm. The face of the brooch bears chip-carved and inlaid decoration the main feature of which is a central cross dividing the field into four equal parts. The reverse is undecorated and corroded. A complete cast copper alloy Medieval bar mount with pendant loop. The quatrefoil shaped loop has a terminal knop. At the upper end has a constriction for the suspending bar-mount. The bar is leaf-shaped at the front, with a square plate at the back, joined by a copper alloy rivet. The diameter of the pendant is 14.4mm, the length is 17.7mm and the complete weight is 2.40g. The bar mount has a length of 13.2mm, a width of 4.6mm and a thickness of 5.4mm.

A slightly crushed Medieval lead-alloy bell. The crushed ball-shaped bell has an integral D-shaped attachment loop. The base of the bell is made up of four petal like flaps and a pebble found inside the bell may have been the clapper. The body is decorated with a pattern of cast, raised bands representing ribbons, each 4mm wide and filled with raised transverse lines. The diameter is 17.0mm, the length is 21.0mm and the weight is 6.40g. Metal analysis done by the finder using the Phi-Rho-Z method shows that bell is an alloy of 95.01% lead and 4.99% copper. An incomplete cast copper alloy Post Medieval mount. The symmetrical mount has a hollow lozenge shaped central section, which is broken at one end. The surviving end has a flat terminal in the form of a blunt point across a figure of eight moulding. Underneath the terminal is an integral but incomplete pointed lug. It is possible that the broken end of the mount had the same terminal. The surviving length is 36.8mm, the width is 16.5mm, the thickness without the lug is 4.5mm and the weight is 5.47g.
