Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete pointed flint handaxe dating to the Paleolithic. Handaxes were manufactured in Britain from 500,000 BC to 40,000 BC. The tool has been bifacially worked with removals struck from either edge on both faces. There is one small oval area of original cortex on the ventral face measuring 16.5mm x 10.7mm. The handaxe is almost completely recorticated with iron staining suggesting it rolled in water for a considerable time. However, there are a few places where the recortication has chipped off and the original colour of the flint can be seen to be a pale to mid grey. The thi…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late early-medieval (11th century) copper alloy mount in the form of a zoomorphic oval loop, decorated with four moulded animal heads arranged alternately facing upwards and downwards. The heads are arranged equidistantly, but appear at the middle of the long edges and occupying all of the short edges. The band between is vertical and an elongated D in cross-section (being flat to the inside surface), 6.4mm tall and c.2mm thick. Projecting above the heads on the two longer edges is a semi-circular extension c.7mmx2mm, pierced at the centre (1.5mm in diameter); the piercings are perf…

An incomplete early early-Medieval (450-700) copper-alloy cheekpiece from a cheek-bar bridle bit, consisting of a central loop and one extending arm (the other arm, diametrically opposed, is missing due to an old break and now consists of a small stump). The central loop is oval in shape (32.0x27.7x7.8mm) and with significant wear to the irregular central perforation (max.18.1x17.2mm), presumably originally circular in shape but now with four distinct areas of wear, most exaggerated to one edge (between the two arm extensions) where it has a curved profile. These wear marks reflect t…

An apparently complete copper alloy Carolingian mount dating to the 8th or 9th century. It is rectangular in shape with silver inlay and gilding to one side (the 'front') and devolved acanthus decoration. In cross-section, the object is C-shaped, being hollow to the reverse and convex to the front. The front has moulded decoration in the form of two lozenge shapes (formed of a pair of V-shapes on their side) with two half lozenges (a single sideways V-shape) to either side, at either short end of the object. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy mount of probable early Medieval date. The mount is broadly rectangular in plan with splayed edges towards the base, which has smooth curved serrations along the bottom edge. The surface of the mount has an incised design of which the centrepiece is the head of a wolf-like animal. The wolf head is flanked by other linear designs but they are hard to distinguish; they may be intended to represent wings. Beneath the wolf head is what may be the body or legs of the animal, which in turn is standing on a domed feature with linear marking possibly intended to be eye…

A possibly incomplete copper alloy Late Early-Medieval (1000-1100) zoomorphic strap fitting, possibly a strap-end or strap-distributor. It is possibly in the form of a bird's head, with the point opposite the widest end having a very worn rivet projecting from the underside. In profile this resembles a hooked beak. However it also appears to have moulded horns. It measures 26.92mm in length, 11.76mm in max.width and 3.92mm in max.depth, and weighs 3.58g. Object type: LEVALLOIS FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Levallois flake tool of Early Middle Palaeolithic date (c. 250,000 - 180,000 BC). It is sub-cordate in form. It is orangey-brown or 'toffee' coloured all over except for an area of damage to the centre of the ventral face and another area of probably damage on the right towards the distal end of the dorsal face, both of which are lighter in colour. The patination of the flake is an indicator of its age and also shows that it has been 'rolled', suggesting it has been in a high energy environment (such as a river) before its final deposition.

A possible cast copper-alloy pestle probably Post Medieval in date (c. AD 1600-1800 AD), now bent, with one half turned through about forty-five degrees. The object is a bar of broadly circular cross section, though with some faceting to its sides. There is a bulge at a point just off centre which acts as a collar. This is echoed by an expanded flat terminal at one end (Dia.: c. 11.3mm). At the other end is a shallowly biconvex terminal knob; the bar expands gradually towards it. A fragment of a probable cast copper alloy horse harness boss of early medieval date. The decorative style appears to be Salin's Style II. The circular collared setting appears to be filled with a separate rivet which projects from the back; this can be paralleled on some of the disc brooches illustrated by George Speake (Kevin Leahy, pers.comm.). The complete object appears to have been circular with art of the circumference surviving. The central design may have been in the form of a cross. Late sixth/seventh century. It is not clear that the object is gilded.
