Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy possibly Medieval mount, dating to AD 1200-1250. It consists of a slightly tapering rectangular plate, which has a rectangular cross-section and an ornate loop protruding from the top edge; the lower edge has an old break now worn. The front face of the loop bears a moulding depicting a ribbon, which is centered on the top edge. Below the circular hole of the loop, on the front face of the plate there is a cast motif depicting an open hand emerging from a possible cloud. The surfaces are gilded, although on the back face little of the covering survives. "…

A flint probable Mousterian point of Middle Palaeolithic date (c. 150,000 - 40,000 BC). The object is made flint with a mottled light grey and cream coloured opaque patina covering the entire surface of the object. There are small patches of re-cortication on the surface. It is a tertiary flake with no sign of the original cortex remaining and is roughly triangular in plan and plano-convex in cross-section, with a pointed distal end. A small striking platform is evident at the proximal end. This is not centrally placed, but offset to one side. A bulb of percussion extends from this pl…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy box or harness mount, possibly of later Early Medieval date (940-1066 AD). The mount is quatrefoil in shape, with four trefoil shaped pierced lobes set around a circular base. This is concave on the reverse, creating a depression approximately 14mm deep. The centre of the mount is formed into the head of a beast, possibly a mastiff type dog or bear, but also possibly reminiscent of the semi-feline beasts seen on Borre metalwork. This latter suggestion is given due to the exaggeratedly large eyes, measuring 9.4mm across, which are almond shaped. A similar exa…

A fragmentary or incomplete copper alloy object of uncertain date, perhaps a vessel handle, consisting of a sub-circular terminal (22.8mm wide) with a central perforation 2.2mm in diameter, and extending to one side a rectangular-sectioned projection 14.5mm wide and 3.7mm thick. This projection terminates in an old break after c.10mm. The object thins from max.3.7mm thick at the break to 1.2mm at the opposite end of the sub-circular terminal. It measures 31.3mm in incomplete length, is max. 22.8mm wide and weighs 9.20g. The original patina is lost and the metal is now patchy and a br…

A Medieval (1200-1400) strap end of copper alloy composition (as evidenced by substantial greening), with remaining elements of silvering. The object is narrow and thin, tapering from 10mm at the widest surviving part to 7mm at the narrowest. There are two visible plates connected by a pin, though it is clear from the break point at the narrowest end that there were originally two pins and it is at this weak point it has snapped. some compressed dried soil obscures a view of the inside. The upper plate is decorated with a clear border, the area inside of which has remnants of a c…

Salmon coloured pebble, possibly quartzite [non-specialist identification by MF]; plough pebble, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments: '...this is a 'plough pebble' which had been hammered into the sole plate of a wooden plough. The object type needs to be PLOUGH with plough pebble in the classification. I'd suggest a date of c. 800 to 1400AD. These are important, Niall Brady is working on them'. This corrects an initial identification as a 'polisher' by this reporter; a note on that vague identification and a similar object are now relegated to the notes field below. …

An incomplete iron object of uncertain date. The object is roughly oval in plan and flat in profile. The object may have been sharpened at one end so could be the remains of a blade. The possibly sharpened end is slightly flattened, whilst the opposite end tapers and is rounded off. The object could also represent spillage from metalworking. It has mid-green copper alloy staining and shows signs of corrosion on both faces. The overall dimensions are as follows: 79.19mm in length, 31.47mm in width, 6.94mm in thickness and 67.72g in weight.

Terminal from a late Early Medieval copper alloy penannular brooch, probably Irish and of 9th century date. The terminal is flat, triangular, and is rectangular in section. Although all three sides have patches of corrosion, the original wall can be seen thus demonstrating this is a terminal. The left and right perimeters of the terminal are decorated with four incised straight lines. A straight incised line is located from the centre of the terminal and travels to the outer edge. Three diagonally incised lines extend downwards from the central line on either side, thus forming an abs…
