A fragmentary or incomplete copper alloy object of uncertain date, perhaps a vessel handle, consisting of a sub-circular terminal (22.8mm wide) with a central perforation 2.2mm in diameter, and extending to one side a rectangular-sectioned projection 14.5mm wide and 3.7mm thick. This projection terminates in an old break after c.10mm. The object thins from max.3.7mm thick at the break to 1.2mm at the opposite end of the sub-circular terminal. It measures 31.3mm in incomplete length, is max. 22.8mm wide and weighs 9.20g. The original patina is lost and the metal is now patchy and a br…

Undated silver fragment, possibly from a vessel or mount? 25mm long, 20mm wide and 4mm thick with a weight of 10.96g. The object is sub rectangular in form and rectangular in cross section. It has one straight edge with a rounded profile, the others being curved but irregular. On one surface, just below and running parallel to the straight edge, is an inlay of a copper coloured material which runs its length. The object appears to have been broken or cut from a larger object.

A lead vat or tank of early-medieval date c.AD 750-1000. The vat is complete but has been crushed / flattened which has distorted the profile and shape. The distortion has opened the seams and there are some irregular tears in the base and side walls. The vat is constructed in two or possibly three pieces it has a circular base with a diameter of approximately 470mm. The side walls are formed from a single rectangular sheet of lead rolled to form a hoop around the base. The hoop and the base are joined together by the hoop being folded around the base. How this join is secured is diff…

An incomplete incomplete finial from a silver tea pot lid, of Late Georgian to Victorian dating (AD 1750s to AD 1900s) Approximately 90% of the finial is present, with the base and most of the body present. The top is incomplete. The finial originally had a biconvex body with facetted sides (creating a hexagonal shape), with a similar hexagonal base. It was originally hollow, but now contains soil from the burial environment. A casting seam is present around the middle of the body. The base appears to be have been made from a separate piece of probable silver and soldered to the…

Incomplete cast lead spherical vessel with a protruding cylindrical spout, about 8 mm in diameter, that might have also been used as a handle. This might be a miniature lead vessel, representing a larger copper alloy cauldron or round-bottomed vessel, and was probably used as a toy. A variety of miniature lead-alloy kitchen items are known from the 16th to the 18th century (Egan, 1988, 2). The upper edge of the vessel is torn and uneven, so it is difficult to say whether there was another handle or whether this might be a jug with a spout. It may just be the product of melting lead on…

Medievel ceramic vessel grittyware base sherd of a thrown bowl or jug, possibly a pancheon like vessel. Oxidised orange to orange/brown gritty ware, scratchable by thumbnail with force. Hackly, inclusions and voids to 2mm, occasional inclusions to 5 x 3mm and void to 8 x 2mm, including some grass voids. Well sorted, sub rounded to angular, inclusions mostly ironstone, mica and quartz. Does not react to dilute hydrochloric acid. The sherd demonstrates only light abrasion. There is weakly magnetic material adhering internally, probably as a result of iron production on site. Three other…

Late Early Medieval to late Medieval vessel rim sherd from thrown round pot or jug. Oxidised orange to orange/brown gritty ware, scratchable by thumbnail with force. Hackly, inclusions and voids to 2mm, occasional inclusions to 5 x 3mm. Well sorted, sub rounded to angular, inclusions mostly ironstone, mica and quartz. Does not react to dilute hydrochloric acid..There is some weakly magnetic material adhering externally. Its form suggests the vessel probably dates to the first half of the Medieval period (12th-13th century). However care is needed as it may be from a local and highly …

An incomplete copper-alloy artefact of Early-Medieval date. The artefact consists of a solid, roughly 'D-shaped' fitting. At its centre is a 'V-shaped' moulding which is flanked on either side by a groove and a parallel ridge with ropework incisions. The 'V' extends upwards into a projecting 'arm' of semicircular section, curving backwards and broken (in antiquity) at the top. Either side of this central element, set slightly lower, is an outward-facing zoomorphic head of elongated 'S shape'. The flat surface of each head bears a single punched ring mark at its wider, inner end, rep…

A fragment of a wheel thrown ceramic vessel of uncertain date. The fragment is from a shallow cup or bowl with an orange fabric of a fine, hard texture and an orange-red slip which is still glossy in places. The fragment is decorated with a medial strip flanked by narrow borders. Within the strip are four curved arches each with three vertical lines within. This decoration is unusual as it has been scratched into the slip, removing it down to the level of the original fabric, rather than moulded or stamped. The piece is believed by the recorder and Finds Advisor Kevin Leahy to be Ro…
