A lead alloy possible weight of Post Medieval date. The object is circular in plan and has convex sides. One face is dished and is marked with scratches radiating from the centre. The opposite face has similar scratches, but more of them, and has three concavities with a raised rim and a higher point in the centre. The scratches may be caused by rodent gnawing, but they are probably not random enough for this. The object has a well developed white patina with patches of dark brown. At almost half an ounce in mass (14.04g.), it may have been intended as a 1/2oz weight. It could also ha…

The socket appears to be of solid construction. An unusual feature, and the one that indicates a Modern date, is a bolt across the socket of which only the hexagonal head and nut can be seen projecting from the sides of the socket. The socket is full of earth and corrosion. When recovered from the ground, the spear had laye…

Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast fragment with a flat back. The reddish tint below an abraded surface patina is a feature of many objects of Anglo-Scandinavian date. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly comments that, rather than being a distressed artefact fragment, this may be a fragment of casting spillage.Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1800.

A lead artefact of incertain date. This artefact is sub-spherical being circular in plan with a flattened top and base which gives the profile a sub-rectangular profile with convex curved sides. This item weighs 22.03g (0.78oz), has a diameter of 18.6mm and height of 12.1mm. A vertical circular perforation, straight sided, of 6.2mm diameter is present through the centre of the artefact. A shallow thin groove defines the two flat surfaces. Five ring and dot motifs of 2.6mm diameter decorate the external surface unequally spaced around the maximum girth of the diameter.

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Early Medieval finger ring, gold, decorated with granulation, filigree and with enamel inlay. The ring is based on a strip of sheet gold, expanded to form the bezel, on the underside of which is a stepped, transverse, joint. The hoop has a keeled (flattened triangular) section but towards the bezel it smoothly changes to a flattened 'D'. On the bezel are five areas of cloisonné enamel, a circular panel containing a cross-like motif, made up of a central field filled with pale yellow enamel around which are four petal-shaped fields filled with white enamel. The area between these four…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete openwork fragment possibly part of a Late, Early Medieval strap end althought it is, in comparison to other finds, unusually small and thin. This fragment is a flattish sub-rectangular piece of copper-alloy weighing 1.29g with a length of 17.5mm and thickness of 1.4mm. The maximum width is 15.17mm and the width seems to taper towards one end. The upper surface, which seems to be slightly more rounded than the flatter reverse, is decorated with a minimum of four, incised ring and dot motifs. It is interesting to note that some of the inner raised ring and central dots are…
