Disc shaped lead object with a crudely cast rib across one face, other face plain. At one side are traces of what might be a casting gate. Function unknown. MF notes the mass might qualify this as a weight representing one ora/ore, or six [underweight] sub-units of 4.07gms, as used for silver bullion transactions in the Viking Age.

A lead alloy possible weight of Post Medieval date. The object is circular in plan and has convex sides. One face is dished and is marked with scratches radiating from the centre. The opposite face has similar scratches, but more of them, and has three concavities with a raised rim and a higher point in the centre. The scratches may be caused by rodent gnawing, but they are probably not random enough for this. The object has a well developed white patina with patches of dark brown. At almost half an ounce in mass (14.04g.), it may have been intended as a 1/2oz weight. It could also ha…

An Early-Medieval lead-alloy weight with inserted copper-alloy decorative panel. The artefact takes the form of quadrant-shaped block with vertical outer sides and a flat base. A chip carved copper-alloy panel has been inserted into the upper surface of the weight, occupying most of the weight's upper surface, with which it sits flush. The decoration is skilfully executed, comprising an elaborate interlace pattern of ridges and 'V-shaped' grooves. The design is that of a stylised, winged, dragon-like animal, entwined with foliate spirals. The left-facing head of the beast is located…

Cast lead alloy lead weight, possibly dating from the later post medieval period, that is c. AD1500-1800. The weight is flat-rectangular in shape and has a flat rectangular cross-section. There is a small copper-alloy piece of metalwork integrated into one of the larger surfaces but it is unclear what it was primary to insertation into the weight. Kevin Leahy (pers. comm.) adds that it does not fit into the Danish module as it does resemble some of the weights on which Dave Haldenby and Jane Kershaw are working.

A lead alloy weight dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 800 - 1100. The weight is hexagonal in plan with a flat base and sides that taper slightly inwards towards the top. Three sides are longer than the other three sides, arranged alternately. The top is inset with a decorative copper alloy plate that is also hexagonal but with concave sides. The central motif on the plate is an equilateral triangle with concave sides, each of the three apices of the triangle terminating in a crescent with the points facing outwards to create three sides of the hexagon. Each of the concav…

Lead Pump seal Weights, as kindly identified by Dr Kevin Leahy. Two cast plates (a and b). Each object is a plate with one rounded end and an opposed straight edge, formed like the heel of a boot. The objects have bevelled edges, which for a heel would be angled inward and forward. The 'upper' surfaces bear integrally cast waisted studs with rounded heads of diameter 22-25mm. The larger of these objects retains fragments of thick (circa 4mm) leather in the waist of the stud, which probably passed through a slightly smaller hole cut in the leather. The leather would be oiled to serve…

A complete polyhedral lead weight, probably dating to the early medieval period (c.AD 850-950). The weight has eight unequal sides with each face presenting incised lines of inconsistent directions. One face appears to have a square in the centre. The edges are rounded which may be due to abrasion from the sea (found on coastland). The object has a smooth dark grey patina. Dimensions: Length 11.6mm; width 11.23mm; weight 9.7g Similar polyhedral weights have been discovered at the Viking camp/settlement at Torksey, see DENO-C08136; DENO-C075A3; DENO-C065B4 andDENO-9458A3 …
