Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy possible weight of Post Medieval date. The object is circular in plan and has convex sides. One face is dished and is marked with scratches radiating from the centre. The opposite face has similar scratches, but more of them, and has three concavities with a raised rim and a higher point in the centre. The scratches may be caused by rodent gnawing, but they are probably not random enough for this. The object has a well developed white patina with patches of dark brown. At almost half an ounce in mass (14.04g.), it may have been intended as a 1/2oz weight. It could also ha…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A pair of incomplete copper alloy strap loop fittings dating to the medieval period. The mounts are stylistically very similar and may have come from the same mould and as they were found in close proximity likely came from the same belt. The fittings have different decorative attributes and are therefore described separately.
Mount A) An animal's head and snout, with upturned lip, is set horizontally with a slightly raised head. The snout narrows and a small area appears to have been damaged through use, as this is the section that would have fitted into the loop to secure the fit…

Object type: LEVALLOIS FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Levallois flake tool of Early Middle Palaeolithic date (c. 250,000 - 180,000 BC). It is sub-cordate in form. It is orangey-brown or 'toffee' coloured all over except for an area of damage to the centre of the ventral face and another area of probably damage on the right towards the distal end of the dorsal face, both of which are lighter in colour. The patination of the flake is an indicator of its age and also shows that it has been 'rolled', suggesting it has been in a high energy environment (such as a river) before its final deposition.
