Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Neolithic to Bronze age multi-platform flint core, which shows signs of working almost every surface apart from one area covering about a quarter of the surface, where rough yellow-brown cortex remains. This working takes the form of many irregular scars where small flakes of varying shapes have been removed from multiple platforms including at least two at right angles. However, the undiagnostic nature of these scars makes it difficult to date the core beyond a probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date range. The flint is dark grey with lighter coloured patches. The patina is a shiny gra…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A group of 53 pieces of flint debitage, the waste material from flint working. Based on their form and other worked flint found with them including tools and cores the debitage pieces probably range from Mesolithic to Bronze Age in date, about 9000 BC to 800 BC.
The colour of the flint debitage ranges from mid brown-grey to pale grey some, mostly the blade like pieces, with a thick white patina.
Rows 1 to 4 are all blades or snapped blades and tertiary pieces. C3 and D3 are patinated across the snap, all the other snaps are unpatinated, and possibly recent.
Rows 5 to 8 are al…

Knapped flint multi-platform core of later Neolithic or Bronze Age date, c. 3,300 to 800 BC, possibly originally discoidal. Shallow scars from the removal of large, broad flakes on both faces, irregular (accidental) break along one edge and possibly accidental break along the opposite edge. Both faces have evidence for working in at least two directions at 45 degrees to each other. Removals appear to have been taken off other removals on the other face, rather than a prepared platform leaving an acute angle between the working faces.
It is 41.9mm by 35.0mm and 18.0mm thick; it weig…

An incomplete copper alloy brooch or mount, of 8th Century AD dating.
Gild copper alloy disc, with a central hole. The disc is divided into four fields by a plain cross in the four angles of which are the figures of animals surrounded by interlace. Each of these looks back over its own body and appears to have wings, although the details are difficult to discern. The eyes are marked by incised dots, the forehead and nose are separated by a steep step and, behind the eye of each animal, are two converging lines. The possible wings also bear converging lines and the animals' bodies m…

A fragment of an 8th century copper alloy circular openwork mount with traces of gilding. Part of the circumference survives along with a panel of single-strand interlace and the edges of openwork elements. The position of a separate circular element is suggested by an undecorated circular area with a central circular rivet hole. On the back is a fragment of a separately-attached sheet metal plate which is still held in place by two small copper alloy rivets. A large rivet hole on the circumference of the fragment also penetrates this separate plate.
The diameter of the complete ob…

Dark grey flint knife. Oval knife with abrupt hard hammer working from various directions covering both sides. There is a suggestion of battering along one edge of what may have been the dorsal aspect, to judge from the curved profile of the flake. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests that the low angle retouch should suggest the identification of this object as a knife, rather than a scraper, which was the initial suggestion advanced by this reporter. Suggested date: Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC.
Length: 53.1mm, Width: 33.0mm, Thickness: 13.1mm, Weight: 24.14gms.

An iron whittle tanged knife of Roman to Medieval date. The blade measures 93.02mm in length and the tang 13.17mm in length. The tang is incomplete. Each edge is slightly curved with the cutting edge measuring 1.28mm thick and the opposite edge measuring 2.07mm. The knife terminates with a rounded point. The surfaces of the object are uneven due to corrosion. It is mid-brown in colour.
The form is of Manning's Roman Type 16, which he says is a long-live type. The form would also be quite acceptable in the Early Medieval period (Drinkall type A) and there are good parallels in Cowgi…

Cast copper alloy swivel or strap fitting dating from the early medieval period, that is the 11th or 12th century. The fitting appears complete but very worn. It is composed of two halves which are identical. They are mounted on an internal rivet and rotate freely, as can be seen in the finder's images taken from different angles. The cross-section of both segments is circular at the bottom/in the centre, but they each terminate in a small animal or possibly quadruped which sits on the apex of each half. The surfaces of both halves are extremely worn but some of the moulded decoration…

Cast copper alloy miscast or burnt object, possibly dating from the early medieval period, that is c. 10th-12th century. Rather than spillage or casting waste, this object looks like either a mis-cast or a burnt object. Casting spillage is usually single faced, the back having been open to the air and plain; this object appears to have been double sided. The 'interlace' strands could by Urnes style but there is no sign of any zoomorphic element and the bosses are extremely uncommon for Urnes style decorated objects. The bosses/studs on one face suggest that it was a mount - a belt or …

A 1920s/30s Art-Deco urn (garden decoration) made from a conglomerate man-made material best termed as concrete.
The object stands 230mm high, with an outer diameter of 185mm. The walls of the top of the piece are 32mm thick. The 'cup' is 80mm deep. The base has a diameter of 132mm.
The object has been cast in concrete, probably mass produced in a mould. There are no tool or working marks that would be visible had it been carved or ground from stone, even a soft stone such as sandstone.
On the inside edge of the urn is visible a small strip of iron embedded into the surface. T…

Two parts of a copper alloy object, a Medieval buckle dating from AD 1250 - 1450. About half of the hoop survives in two pieces. It is a rounded rectangle in section, expanding slightly in width at one end. This projection would have been part of a projecting pin rest and is thinner than the hoop of the frame. The hoop is decorated on the surviving side by expanding the width of the hoop into three openwork lobes, so there are three rings along the side of the hoop. The break between the two surviving pieces is across the upmost ring. The breaks are very worn and patinated. The top of…

A possibly incomplete copper alloy Late Early-Medieval (1000-1100) zoomorphic strap fitting, possibly a strap-end or strap-distributor. It is possibly in the form of a bird's head, with the point opposite the widest end having a very worn rivet projecting from the underside. In profile this resembles a hooked beak. However it also appears to have moulded horns. It measures 26.92mm in length, 11.76mm in max.width and 3.92mm in max.depth, and weighs 3.58g.
The object is triangular in shape with two rivet holes (c.3mm diameter) at the wider end, retaining traces of iron rivets. This end…

Copper alloy pin with a knotted head. The pin is formed of a robust circular sectioned shank which widens gradually from the flattened rectangular sectioned tip to the head. It is 4.0mm in diameter at the head. The head is integral and formed of the circular sectioned wire which forms the pin. The wire has been coiled around twice and then brought around the front of the coils in a chord and the end tucked into the hole in the centre of the coils. The coils are corroded together. The wire is possibly flattened but is narrower than the pin. It is widest where it meets the pin, tapering…
