A fragment of a Roman cast copper-alloy and iron key (AD 43-410). This fragment is the complete bow which is tri-lobed with a baluster collar. The tri-lobed element is pierced with three evenly spaced circular holes forming a triangle. Each hole has a diameter of about 5.8mm. Its outer end is straight and on each face at the end it is decorated with a horizontal groove which has oblique grooves above and below. On one side, the grooves have almost worn away. A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy slide key (c. 700-900). The bow is relatively large, sub-circular in plan and the frame is sub-circular in cross-section. Its shank is circular in cross-section and has a diameter of about 5.0mm. At the end of the shank a small circular depression measures 2.0mm in diameter about 1.5mm in depth. A cast copper alloy casket key of Goodall's Winchester type 1. The long drop-shaped bow is openwork with a large curvilinear "keyhole" shaped aperture at the rear and a smaller oval one in front. The stem is short and solid, with a step to a narrowed projecting tip. The bit is rectangular with a single square cleft at the top of the leading edge; at the bottom of the bit is a small right-angled projecting ward, giving the bit an L-shaped cross-section. An incomplete cast copper-alloy key of possible post-medieval date. The object consists of a large sub-oval loop with very slightly off-centre circular hole bevelled internally on both faces (countersunk) (Dia.: 8.55mm). The lower edge of the loop is flattened and the object tapers to a stem (W.: c. 8.5mm). The stem is of flat rectangular cross-section and flares out at its base to a double ridged collar (W.: 9.25mm). A complete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Middle Anglo Saxon slide lock key. The short circular shank terminates with a D-shaped bow with two knobs at the end of the shank, on the inside of the D-shaped aperture. The rectangular bit terminates with a short tongue-shaped knob and has three small circular projections at the terminal end in a triangular formation with a larger projection in the middle of the bit. There is also a circular aperture near the shank end of the bow. The length of the key si 62.0mm, the width of the bow is 37.0mm and the weight is 38.38g.

The rectangular bit has a smaller rectangular terminal, a rectangular aperture near the shank and three circular projections (each 11.5mm high in a triangular formation at the terminal end). The length of the key is 73.2mm, the length of the shank is 5.8mm, the width of the bow is 38.0mm and the weight is 42.18g.

The stem has a flattened circular section. The bit is simple, consisting of a square plate of copper alloy. A cleft has been cut on one side of the bit. The surface is a mid greyish-green colour and is pitted. The key is medieval in date. Parallels can be seen in Egan, p112-3, Fig: 86.

A small rotary key, cast in copper alloy. The bow is circular and fairly small. There is no collar next to the bow. The stem is solid, with a flattened circular section, there is no projecting tip, as the end of the stem in hollow. The bit is simple, consisting of a square plate of copper alloy. A small cleft has been formed on either side of the bit, therefore forming four wards. The surface is a mid brownish-green colour and is pitted. The key is medieval in date. The surface has been filed. Parallels can be seen in Egan, p112-3, Fig: 86.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy key dating to the medieval period. The key comprises a hollow, circular-sectioned stem, which widens towards the bit. The tip measures 10mm in diameter. The stem of the key is decorated with incised parallel bands, in groups of three. Much of the surface of the stem is missing, due to heavy corrosion and pitting. The bow is completely missing, due to the break. But the bit survives intact. There is a channel below the stem and the bit is only joins to it via a very narrow and short section of the bit. An complete cast copper alloy Medieval rotary key. The hollow tubular stem terminates with a collar of three mouldings and a circular bow. On either side of the bow are a number of spurs that could represent animal heads. The symmetrical rectangular bit has two clefts on each side and a cleft on the bottom. The length of the bit is 12.2mm, the width is 18.3mm and the thickness is 5.5mm. The external length of the bow is 23.5mm and the width is 17.9mm. The complete length of the key is 68.5mm, the diameter of the stem is 7.3mm and the weight is 27.39g.
