A cast copper alloy buckle plate of medieval date. The folded copper-alloy buckle plate has been notched to take the pin and at the edges to fit the buckle frame. It is pierced twice for the fixing to the strap rivets, one of these rivets remains in place the other is missing. The back plate is missing broken off at the fold in the area of the buckle. Dr Kevin Leahy suggests that the design of incised lines may be in the form of a bird.

An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle plate of medieval date. The plate is rectangular in both plan and section with two worn and broken tabs to act as hinges around the strap bar of the buckle. The resulting rectangular recess would have allowed the pin to swivel freely around the bar. The front face is decorated with a raised foliate design within a raised border upon which traces of gilding remain. The plate would have had two rivets at the attachment end however only one now survives projecting from the front face. The reverse of the plate is undecorated The metal has a mid re…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle plate of 9th-century date. It is made from a single thin sheet of copper alloy, which tapers from a wider to a narrower end. Both ends are incomplete. At the wider end there are two sub-rectangular projections with a rectilinear slot in between; this may be the remains of two hinge loops to attach the plate to a frame. At the other end are two incomplete circular rivet holes. Between the rivet holes is an engraved sub-triangular shape, two sides concave and the other convex, which may be related to the 'fan-shaped' motifs found on 9th-century strap-en…

The zoomorphic projection has oval shaped moulded eyes and a triangular snout or nose. The main body of the buckle then expands to the opposing upper edge which features two broadly rectangular projections at the outer corners. An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy and enamel buckle, dating to c AD 650 - 750. It consists of the loop of what was probably a three-part buckle. Tongue and plate (which would have been integral to one another) and what was probably a sub-triangular body, are missing. The loop is sub-pelta shape with the outer edge possibly taking the form of two opposed stylised zoomorphic heads, raised up, their snake-like tails continuing around the loop and almost meeting at the attachment end. Below the raised heads is a half-round pin notch. The beasts are indicated by sub-rectangular and…

A copper alloy buckle dating from the Early Medieval period. The buckle is 36mm long, 38.2mm wide and 11mm thick. It has an oval sectioned bar which is worn at the ends and which is gripped by two animal heads. These extend into the extremely extended outer edge which is convex and rounded. It is decorated in Borre style with further designs which are probably the bodies of the two animals entwined, but the design is too worn to be certain. The reverse is hollow. The pin and plate are missing. The metal is dark grey green. Similar examples can be seen in figure 68.6 in Leahy (2007) an…

A copper alloy penannular loop which is probably a broken buckle or possibly a very unusual finger ring. The ring has sub-lozenge shaped thick terminals but the loop is thin and angled. It flares from the terminals to 9.8mm wide in the middle. The outer surface of the loop is pitted, though the inner surface is in better condition. The patina has been recently destroyed. There is a projection from one terminal knop which could be the remains of a bar to which the pin would have been attached if the object was a buckle. There is no evidence for a pin rest. No decoration survives, if the…

Copper alloy buckle dating to 11th century. The buckle frame is square shaped with a narrow bar. The part of the frame opposite the bar is wider and decorated. The decoration is worn but could be a leaf or knot design (possibly Viking Borre style) at the top and bottom with a notch for the pin between. The front decorated face of the buckle has evidence of gilding whilst the reverse of the buckle has been silvered or tinned although only part of this surface treatment survives. The buckle weighs 5.5g and measures 22mm in width, 21.5mm in length and 4.2mm in thickness.

Two parts of a copper alloy object, a Medieval buckle dating from AD 1250 - 1450. About half of the hoop survives in two pieces. It is a rounded rectangle in section, expanding slightly in width at one end. This projection would have been part of a projecting pin rest and is thinner than the hoop of the frame. The hoop is decorated on the surviving side by expanding the width of the hoop into three openwork lobes, so there are three rings along the side of the hoop. The break between the two surviving pieces is across the upmost ring. The breaks are very worn and patinated. The top of…
