An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Medieval date (1200-1300).
In plan, the brooch has a triangular open frame. It is convex at the front and flat at the rear. Two arms form the sides and the third arm is the bar. All three arms are ‘D’-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. Each arm is roughly the same length and at each corner there is a small boss, possibly zoomorphic. However, due to corrosion and possibly wear, this is uncertain. The bar has a small constriction for the copper alloy wire pin. Only the loop of the pin has survived.
The brooch has a mid-green pa…

A fragmentary copper alloy Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch of which only the bow survives. The fragment is rectangular and arched. It has a central vertical ridge with a circular boss in the middle. Chip carved decoration is present on either side of the central ridge though corrosion and dirt obscure the details of the pattern which is in Anglo Saxon Style I animal art style. A fragment from a cast copper-alloy brooch of early-medieval date consisting of the lower bow and foot (6th century AD). The foot plate is flat with cusped side projections each decorated with three hollows. The projections taper towards the terminal which appears to have been slightly truncated as a result of old damage. The field between the projections is decorated with a so-called 'chip carved' triple triangular motif with a further engraved line on each side. Much gilding survives within the recesses, with some also present on the bow. On the lower surface of the plate is an abra…

The catchplate survives on the reverse. The brooch would have been 36.2mm in diameter though this is now its height only - its width is 25mm. It weighs 7.4g and is 1.7mm thick. On the front is depicted a profile bust facing right, with shoulders facing forwards. The nose is long and bulbous and the eyes almond-shaped. A cast copper alloy Roman brooch, which has been difficult to pin down to a specific type as a parallel could not be found within the normal literature.
The brooch has a rectangular head, with a rectangular recess behind it. The edges of which are semi-circular and pierced, through this an axis bar has been slotted and this holds the spring in place. The spring has four turns but the pin has broken off. Above the head the broken remains of a loop can be seen.
The upper bow is formed from a flat plate of copper alloy, it is bent a third of the way down (rather like a knee brooch) and…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch, probably a Rosette Keyhole type. The semi-tubular wings have a tubular copper alloy insert which contains an iron axis bar for the hinged pin mechanism. Fragments of the copper alloy pin are visible through a slot in the centre of the tubular insert. The bow is set at a ninety-degree angle to the wings and the flat circular part of the bow is set parallel to the wings. In the centre of the very worn circular bow is an incomplete possibly iron rivet, the rest of the bow is undecorated. It is truncated at the base of the bow and the foot is…

A fragment of a cast lead Early Medieval Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch. The fragment consists of part of the foot. Either side of which are lappets, originally in the form of eagle's heads. At the lower end of the fragment is a moulding representing the brow with ridges above the eyes on the foot. Behind the foot is the remains of the catchplate, which has been turned over, apparently for use. A feature of the brooch that cannot be understood is the material that fills the recessed lines on the face of this object. This is mid-green and purple in colour and seems soft. It has been su…
