A flint coarse retouched flake probably dating to the later Bronze Age. The object is triangular in cross-section with the remains of cortex on one side of the dorsal face. At the proximal end is a large triangular striking platform while a small (possibly accidental) triangular platform is at the distal end. Along the long edge the retouch is short, sub-parallel and at a low angle. A small amount of retouch is also on the opposite edge where the cortex has been removed. It is also short, sub-parallel and low angled. The flint has a dark grey cortex and a toffee brown to light cream m…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Mesolithic to Neolithic retouched flake, dating 10,000-2,350 BC. The flake is triangular in shape with evidence of retouch on both sides. Faint traces of a bulb of percussion are visible on one side, though few other indicators of knapping are present. One tip of the object also appears to have broken away, probably during knapping. Due to the incompleteness of this object it is difficult to further specify a period of production. Dimensions: length: 35.28 mm; width: 44.46 mm; thickness: 10.74 mm; weight: 20.12g.

A Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age retouched flake. The translucent dark grey flint is heavily patinated off white and has a patch of cortex. The flake has been broken at the proximal end and fine retouch along edge of the dorsal face. Both of these expose the dark grey flint core, which suggests that the flake was reused at a later date. The length is 25.2mm, the width is 15.9mm, the thickness is 7.8mm and the weight is 3.32g.
