A Mesolithic flint burin, dating to c. 10000 - 4000 BC. The burin is made of a tertiary flake of brown flint with a low gloss patina, the majority of the object has patinated to an off white pale blue. The tool is broadly sub-triangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross section. The front face of the blade (dorsal face) has a number of areas of small retouch along both edges. A complete pointed flint handaxe dating to the Paleolithic. Handaxes were manufactured in Britain from 500,000 BC to 40,000 BC. The tool has been bifacially worked with removals struck from either edge on both faces. There is one small oval area of original cortex on the ventral face measuring 16.5mm x 10.7mm. The handaxe is almost completely recorticated with iron staining suggesting it rolled in water for a considerable time. A chunk of lentoid section with an apparently curving cutting edge with polishing immediately adjacent to it, but otherwise bearing the scars of covering scalar working entailing hard hammer removal of a small number of large flakes. The object is sub-triangular in plan with a lozenge shaped cross-section. The flint has a rounded point and two seperate barbs. There is no central tang and it does not appear that one has broken away. The object has short parallel long angled retouch along each edge and is flaked on each surface. One long edge measures 5mm thick, while the opposite long edge is just 2mm thick. The arrowhead is on a light grey flint with no remaining cortex.
