A complete copper alloy early medieval (Anglo Saxon) plate-headed pin, c. late 9th century AD. The pin comprises a flat, sub-circular head decorated on the front with ring-and-dot motif at the four cardinal points and one in the centre. There are four circular perforations, one in each corner. It is undecorated on the back. There is no collar around the shank, which tapers gradually to a point and show very slight evidence of being hipped. The end of the shank is bent slightly to the left. Length: 54.25mm, width of head: 17.87mm, thickness of shank (middle): 1.82mm, weight:…

Head of a copper alloy 8th century Anglo-Saxon pin, probably part of a triple, or double, pin set. The head and part of the shank survive in very good condition with hardly any corrosion or bronze disease present on the surface, except in the centre of the obverse where corrosion started in the crevices of the decoration. It was made from cast copper alloy, probably with part-incised decoration on the obverse. The silvery shine on the reverse strongly suggests that the pin had been silvered or tinned. There is a small hole in the side of the head, possibly to link the pin to the centr…

Complete cast copper alloy early medieval 'Wrythen pin' dating from the Middle Saxon period, that is c. 9th century. The pin is complete, but slightly bent out of shape and shows corrosive patches along the shaft. It has an oval/onion-shaped head (diameter 8mm) with engraved spiral decoration, often called 'wrythen-headed' (Hinton 1996, 16-17). There is a double-collar beneath its head. The shaft has a circular cross-section broken circular-section. Parallels on the database are NMS-11C7B1 and two finds in 2004 from Barton Bendish, Norfolk (HER 17212), and Beachamwell, Norfolk (HER 4530).

A copper alloy pin, possibly an Early Medieval ringed pin dating from AD 700 - 1000, though sometimes found in contexts as late as the 12th century (Griffiths, Philpot and Egan 2007, Meols Catalogue, page 68). Alternatively, this could be the pin from a penannular brooch of similar date, or a simple pin with a scrolled head. The pin is made in one piece, is sub-circular in section and tapers to a blunt point. At the head end, it becomes square in section, then flat and rectangular. This part has been rolled into a loop which overlaps for half the circumference. The loop has externa…

An incomplete and undecorated Bronze Age copper-alloy Picardy pin (1400 BC-1250 BC). This object is circular in cross-section throughout its length with a cell/recess at the top and a swollen shaft. At the top, the sides of the cell are vertical. From here the sides taper inwards and then flare outwards before gently tapering inwards towards a transverse break at the bottom. Close to the break a tiny projection may be the reamains of a loop. The depth of the cell is 3.1mm. There is no indication of any decorative material within the cell. The object has a brown patina with small…

A fragment of an Early medieval, probably 8th century, copper alloy circular pinhead or brooch with traces of gilding. Part of the circumference survives along with panels of single-strand, non-zoomorphic, interlace and part of a volute-shaped element. This object is truncated but the curvature of the surviving edge suggests an original diameter of c. 30.0mm. It is likely that the plain, but gilded, circular area with a central hole was one of four such elements, a feature appears on the Witham pins (Wilson, 1964, pl.XVIII, No. 19).The style is similar to SUR-BD3980 and NLM-028751. …

A copper alloy possible pin of Early Medieval date. The object is anthropomorphic, being moulded in the form of a human male head, and inverted piriform in plan. The pointed end at the chin of the face is a patinated break. The object has a flat back and a moulded, three-dimensional front. It appears to be solid. The moulded head is smaller than the integral flat back of the object, so there is a flat narrow projecting rim round the edge of the object. The edge of this is chipped in places. Kevin Leahy interprets this (from images) as un untrimmed casting flash, and suggests that…

The sides of the head taper from the top to the base where there is a minor collar. The head is divided by a circumferential groove about two thirds of the way down from the top. Copper alloy pin with a knotted head. The pin is formed of a robust circular sectioned shank which widens gradually from the flattened rectangular sectioned tip to the head. It is 4.0mm in diameter at the head. The head is integral and formed of the circular sectioned wire which forms the pin. The wire has been coiled around twice and then brought around the front of the coils in a chord and the end tucked into the hole in the centre of the coils. The coils are corroded together. The wire is possibly flattened but is narrower than the pin. It is widest where it meets the pin, tapering…

Copper alloy pin. Cast slightly tapering pin of round section with a flat openwork head with engrailed edges and a balanced curvilinear composition, possibly abstracted from the popular motif of a hand grasping a fruit or pearl. On one side - the better preserved - a collar is provided at the base of the head by a horizontal series of tiny and closely spaced punched dots of diameter c.0.5mm; similar dots also form a border motif for the open parts of the head, probably on both sides. The shank is bent through 90 degrees at its mid point, a feature of hair pins sometimes thought to rel…

The head is globular in form being an elongated oval in section with no notable surface design, although there is considerable pitting and corrosion. At the base of the globular head is a collar, a feature which is taken as a key indication of an early Medieval date. Each one flares out from the top, and curls underneath, forming what looks like a pair of specticles. The pin is bent in the middle, almost in 2. It is in a good gondition, and has a bright green patina. Coiled headed pins are known in the Early Medieval period, although they tend coil inwards towards the pin, not out. It is likely this object is Medieval. Dr Kevin Leahy writes: while it is dot stated in the des…
