The main body of the object is ovate with a D-shaped section and a flattened terminal to one end and an expanded spatulate terminal to the other. The flattened terminal has a central perforation running through it. Two bulbous knopped protrusions flank the opposite terminal at the narrowest point. Complete early medieval decorated lead sword pommel of the 'cocked hat' type (c. 500 - 700 AD). The pommel has a shallow depression to the base which is partly filled with organic detriment due to the context of its deposition. The pommel is broadly triangular in shape with a rounded tip and two square faces at either end. The front, back and top faces are decorated with a pattern of a pair of twisting bands in relief. The pommel is in bad repair; one side has been bent out of place and a lower section of the pommel has been shorn off. A dark grey shiny patch at the top of the pommel …

A copper-alloy Medieval annular brooch dating to the period c.AD 1200-1300. The brooch is broadly ovate in plan, with a rectangular cross-section. A zoomorphic head projects from the middle point of each long edge, and curves around to point inwards. It is likely that these represent snakes. Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone perforated object, dating to from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age (c.9,000-1,600 BC). The stone is broadly square in plan, but tapers slightly to a terminal with a worn break. A circular concave area is present on each side just before the break, resulting in the oval cross section narrowing at the centre. This suggests that the stone has been partially perforated. One indent has a dark brown patina on some areas. The other terminal is oval in cross section and also terminates in a worn break. Stuart Ogilvy (geologist) has looked at the stone and belives it is a s…

An incomplete medieval badge in the form of an axehead, dating to the period c.AD 1300-1600. Decoration comprises a grid pattern on both the front and reverse of the blade. The wings of the axehead are now missing. A light grey patina is on the surface. Lead axeheads were a common form of secular badge in the late 13th to 16th centuries. They were perhaps worn by spectators at tournaments and …

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (circa 4000-2350BC). The implement is most likely a knife, although could be a small Neolithic hand-axe shaped implement known as an 'Ovate' dating to the Late Neolithic (3000-2350BC). However, the implement is not bifacially worked to the extent expected of an Ovate. The implement appears to have been knapped from a primary flake, from which secondary and tertiary flakes have been removed from the ventral surface. The Dorsal face has been worked to remove cortex on the left medial edge, leaving a substantial amount on the right…

An incomplete knapped lithic axehead of Neolithic date (c.4000 BC - 2200 BC). The axehead is broken and may have been reused as a scraper. When complete the object would have been ovate in both plan and section though around half of the axehead is now missing due to a transverse break. The axehead has been bifacially flaked using covering scaled low angle flaking. Short scaled semi-abrupt retouch is visible along the distal edge suggesting the object may have been repurposed as a scraper after breaking. The flint is an off-white patchy colour.
