A near complete copper-alloy and enamelled Early-Medieval buckle, dating from circa AD 700-800. The object is broadly an inverted triangle in plan with an expanded zoomorphic projection at the tip. The zoomorphic projection has oval shaped moulded eyes and a triangular snout or nose. The main body of the buckle then expands to the opposing upper edge which features two broadly rectangular projections at the outer corners. An incomplete copper alloy brooch or mount, of 8th Century AD dating. Gild copper alloy disc, with a central hole. The disc is divided into four fields by a plain cross in the four angles of which are the figures of animals surrounded by interlace. Each of these looks back over its own body and appears to have wings, although the details are difficult to discern. An incomplete copper alloy trefoil plate brooch of Late Early Medieval (Scandiniavian / Viking) dating (AD 850 to AD 1050). Around two thirds (66%) of the brooch is present, consisting of two of the three arms. The third arm is missing, presumed lost in antiquity. An incomplete copper alloy, probable miniature terret ring of probable Late Iron Age to Early Roman dating (100 BC to 100 AD). The terret ring is of an unusual shape, being of a pointed oval shape. The sides have a circular cross section. A narrowed and recessed bar is present at the bottom of the terret ring. Circular collars are present at either side of the strap bar. The sides of the terret initially curve away from the strap bar, but then curve back together, where they join in a point. The top of this point exhibits an old, predepositional break. A total of 91 items were recorded of which 86 are early Medieval and, with three possible exceptions, probably relate to the hoard. The finds recorded consist of 38.85g of gold and 100.90g of silver, including the 79.13g cheek piece, 5004 . It must be recognised that these figures include both earth and garnets and will be reduced by cleaning and that the descriptions of the metal alloys are based only on visual examination, not analysis. Circumstances of discovery The Staffordshire hoard was discovered on the 5th of July, 2009 by Mr Terry Herbert while metal detecting on arable land (now set down to grass) at a site in Staffordshire, land owned and farmed by Mr Fred Johnson. After five days detecting on the site Mr Herbert contacted Mr Duncan Slarke, the local Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Mr Slarke subsequently visited the finder at his home and prepared an initial list of 244 bags of finds. These were taken to Birmingham Museum and HM Coroner informed. An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end, probably dating to the 10th century AD (length: 59.1mm; width: 18.9mm; thickness: 3.2mm; weight: 12.26g), and may be of an Hiberno-Scandinavian origin. This artefact is decorated on the upper surface with three uniform grooves running down its length, as well as one groove crossing the strap end's width at the broken end. To either side of the three grooves, there are the remains of approximately six or seven ring and dots. Pin of possible Roman date, The head is globular with flattened upper and lower faces, it is seated centrally on the shank which has three grooves as decoration below the head. The shank then tapers, undecorated to a blunt point and is slightly bent at the mid-point at c. 170°. The pin has a brown/green patina. Dr Kevin Leahy writes: While mouldings beneath the heads is a feature of Middle Anglo-Saxon pins the multiple mouldings/grooves on this example are more a feature of Roman pins as is its tapering shank. On balance it is best assigned to the Roman period.
