Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint tranchet axehead from the early Mesolithic period (c.9000 - 8000 BC). The flint is a dark brownish-grey and fairly opaque with elements of the cortex visible. The axe is crudely worked, with a rounded cutting edge, roughly parallel sides and a pointed butt. It has a broadly triangular cross-section. The flint appears to be in the second stage of being worked due to the patches of cortex on its butt and and its ventral and dorsal faces. Also, a soft hammering technique seems to have been used, identifiable by the weak ripple marks and low bulbs of percussion. The broad shape of…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy (with high lead content) or lead-alloy pin of probable mid to late Early Medieval date (Anglo-Saxon). Only the pinhead and a short length of the shaft survive. The head is globular in form being an elongated oval in section with no notable surface design, although there is considerable pitting and corrosion. At the base of the globular head is a collar, a feature which is taken as a key indication of an early Medieval date. Below the collar is a short length of the shaft, due to corrosion it is not possible to discern the shape in section. There ap…

Early medieval mount; cast copper alloy mount with applied decoration with inlaid silver wire. The mount probably dates from the 11th century. It is of roughly triangular shape with large, circular rivet holes. There are two holes in the ‘base’ of the triangle, one of which has a break running through it. There is then a smaller hole in the centre of the mount and the tip of the triangle has a curved break, suggesting that there was a fourth rivet hole there. The mount is decorated on one face with narrow, applied strips forming four, back-to-back curls. Each of the strips is furth…

Medieval water tap; Large, cast copper alloy water spout in an elaborate housing. The tap is of probable 13th or 14th century date. The lower housing is in the form of a human head and there is a long stem coming out of the top of the head. The stem curls over and has a beast’s head at its terminal. There is a circular hole in the mouth of the beast and a corresponding hole in the back, at the base of the neck of the human head. This suggests that the piece has a channel running right through it. The human head is decorated with a cast nose and eyebrows in high relief. There are …
