The object is sub-trapezoidal in plan and the longer sides flare outwards and are also slightly concave. A large piece of possible exotic worked stone, of uncertain date and function. It feels to be lighter than if it was made of metal, and heavier than if it was ceramic. It is dark grey / black and very fine grained with rounded (vitrified?) inclusions which have a lustrous silver shine. The matrix is hard and irregular, but can be crushed with a thumbnail. The piece is curved in one plane only. The outer face of the curve is pitted and has a groove across it. The inner face is much smoother though it still has rounded bobbles visible. The broken edges appear black in colour, but have s…

Four cast copper alloy ingots of unknown date. The ingots are all similar in form being broadly sub-rectangular in plan and faceted; each ingot has a different number of sides but all seem to be deliberately hammered or cast. The long sides of each ingot taper and expand forming a number of pre-defined smaller ingots; in shape they are similar to a string of beads or string of sausages. The space between each ingot seems to have a square shaped cross section, suggesting that each miniature ingot was of a predesigned functional size. Each ingot is a mid brown green colour with an even, …

A cast copper alloy ingot of unknown date. The ingot is sub-rectangular in plan and cross section; it tapers from a relatively thick narrow end to a thinner thicker one. The upper surface has a series of incised slightly diagonal lines applied to it. These lines are heavily patinated and form almost a deliberately delineated measure; however, the lines have been applied at random and are irregular in nature. The sides of the ingot are regular and it is possible that they have been hammered to that shape. The metal surface has a deep thick brown coloured patina which is much abraded and…

A small silver object of unknown date. Kevin Leahy (PAS Finds Adviser - Early Medieval metalwork) rejected the piece has being early medieval and Geoff Egan (PAS Finds Adviser - Norman & later finds) rejected it as being medieval or post-medieval so it remains undateble. The object is roughly rectangular in shape. One edge has been spilt open, to create to projections. Clockwise, the next edge has a rounded knop-like projection jutting out to the side. Clockwise again the next two edges have had three ridges and grooves cut into them (like the pages of a book). Both surfaces ha…

An apparently complete copper alloy unidentified object, probably Early-Medieval to Medieval in date (c.400-1500) and with no obvious breaks. Measures 30.08x14.03x2.91mm and weighs 3.93g. The object is flat and curving in profile, with one crimped end, tapering and thickening to become D-shaped in cross-section (5.23x2.91mm) though apparently not crimped to hold anything - there is a very slight opening only. The object is otherwise rectangular in cross-section with the opposite end measuring 14.03x1.42mm. The sides narrow to c.13mm, whereby they thicken (2.76mm) and taper sharply i…
