An Early Medieval copper-alloy Cross Brooch. The brooch was original cross-shaped, but two of the arms are now incomplete. Each arm is sub-rectangular in plan, being slightly wider at the terminal than at the centre of the cross. The perimeter is decorated by a single linear groove. One arm contains three irregularly places diagonal grooves or 'dashes'. The other arm only contains two. In the centre of the brooch are four ringed dot motifs. These are roughly arranged one at the beginning of each arm, but they are somewhat crudely done. An integral loop is located behind one of the arm…

A copper alloy pin, possibly an Early Medieval ringed pin dating from AD 700 - 1000, though sometimes found in contexts as late as the 12th century (Griffiths, Philpot and Egan 2007, Meols Catalogue, page 68). Alternatively, this could be the pin from a penannular brooch of similar date, or a simple pin with a scrolled head. The pin is made in one piece, is sub-circular in section and tapers to a blunt point. At the head end, it becomes square in section, then flat and rectangular. This part has been rolled into a loop which overlaps for half the circumference. The loop has externa…

An incomplete Mesolithic to Neolithic retouched flake, dating 10,000-2,350 BC. The flake is triangular in shape with evidence of retouch on both sides. Copper alloy strap end. Narrow pointed strap end made from two sheets of thickness 0.5mm joined at the belt end by a rivet of diameter 1.6mm and length 3.3mm. It is uncertain how the pointed ends of the sheets were joined; perhaps by a spot of brazing. Though the form and construction is simple, it does not appear amongst numerous strap ends of medieval date reported from London, where comparable shapes were achieved by folding sheet metal. Kevin Leahy kindly notes similar strap ends to be common finds from 14th-century contexts at York. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1400. Length:…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (circa 4000-2350BC). The implement is most likely a knife, although could be a small Neolithic hand-axe shaped implement known as an 'Ovate' dating to the Late Neolithic (3000-2350BC). However, the implement is not bifacially worked to the extent expected of an Ovate. The implement appears to have been knapped from a primary flake, from which secondary and tertiary flakes have been removed from the ventral surface. The Dorsal face has been worked to remove cortex on the left medial edge, leaving a substantial amount on the right…
