A flint blade, probably dating to the early Neolithic period (4000-3501BC) or possibly to the early Mesolithic (10,000-7001BC). Flint - translucent mid grey to orange in colour. The blade is rectangular in plan, with some cortex remaining on the distal end and covering about a third of its dorsal face. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible on the proximal end of the flake. The bulb of percussion shows the signs of a bulbar scar. The artefact has been made out of a secondary flake. The blade bears retouch on one edge to create serration. The po…

A flint implement of probably Neolithic date (4000-2350 B.C). Flint, white, opaque, white/cream patina across whole surface. Roughly triangular in shape and triangular in cross-section. Tertiary flake, broken with striking platform and bulb of purcussion missing. Short, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch around distal end, extending, although shallower, part way along both sides. Flakes removed from dorsal face. Some damage along along the edges on the ventral side. 42.8 mm long. 28.7 mm wide and 6.3 mm thick. 9.15 g.

Flint possible edge-polished fragment. A chunk of lentoid section with an apparently curving cutting edge with polishing immediately adjacent to it, but otherwise bearing the scars of covering scalar working entailing hard hammer removal of a small number of large flakes. Though the putative cutting edge is crisp, the object is broken c.40mm behind it. All surfaces, including the putative fracture surface, are identically covered by a dense creamy patina and are iron stained, features suggesting a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment followed by incorporation in gravels. Thi…

A lithic implement, likely of the Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian flint industry, dating from the Lower Palaeolithic to Early Middle Palaeolithic c.450,000-180,000 BC. Description: The implement is sub-triangular shape with one rounded edge. The entire surface has large covering flaking with some medium parallel retouch to create the scraper edge. The other end is pointed and, while the object is bifacially flaked it is too small to be classified as a handaxe. The flint is a medium orangey brown with some medium brown iron staining. There appears to be some desert gloss on the scraper…

An incomplete Neolithic flint implement (4000 BC-2351 BC). This implement is sub-rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in cross-section throughout its length. In plan, one end is curved and asymmetrical. The opposite end has an oblique break with a flat surface. It is bi-facially worked overall except for a small area close to the centre on one face where there is a patch of grey cortex.. This implement, including the break, has an off-white and grey patina with numerous flecks of iron staining. Length: 104.0mm; width: 36.1mm; thickness: 25.7mm. Weight: 113.27g. The objec…

A complete probable Late Neolithic flint implement (2700 BC-2351 BC). This implement has been fashioned from an elongated pebble. One end has been knapped to form a sharp point and the edges at the tip have been retouched. One edge has been retouched on both faces and has short, low angle, parallel and sub-parallel removals. The other edge, retouched on one face only, has short, low angle parallel removals. The butt end is rounded. About 65% of the surface is cortex which varies in colour from off-white to orange with dark grey speckling. Length: 160.0mm; width: 48.5mm; thick…

A complete flint pickaxe, probably dating from the Mesolithic period (c. 10,000 BC to c. 4,001 BC). This would appear to be a double-ended implement, with a pick at one end and an axe-like blade at the other. Most of the surface of the original nodule has been removed, but one side in particular retains a significant portion of its cortex. The narrowest point is at the pick end, where the surfaces have been deliberately sloped to point, which exhibits signs of wear. The sides gradually diverge from this point, the implement reaching a maximum width approximately one third of the way…

A flint tertiary waste flake of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The flake is incomplete, the remaining portion having parallel long sides which then converge to a point. This point may be the result of a breakage rather than being an original feature; the other end of the flake also shows evidence of having been broken in antiquity. The dorsal surface exhibits two parallel arrises. The ventral surface has rippling but the striking point has been lost. The flint is a heavily patinated greyish-white with one patch of brownish-grey. Dimensions: 41.2mm long, 22.1mm w…

A flint tertiary flake, probably dating from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. The piece is sub-rectangular in plan and of triangular section, with a vertical arrise at the centre of the dorsal surface. A small portion of the core platform remains, adjacent to which, on the ventral surface, there is a bulb scar. The edges of the flake are irregular, probably as a result of natural wear, and there is no evidence that this piece was ever used as a tool. The flint is patinated, light to mid blueish-grey. Dimensions: 24.9mm long, 15.6mm wide, 5.3mm thick. Weight: 2.32g.

A knapped lithic implement of early Bronze Age date. The implement is roughly figure of eight-shaped in plan with an irregular plano-convex section. Evidence of knapping is only present in one area of the implement where a semi-circular notch has been created with steep sides which taper to form a sharp edge. The limited knapping suggests this piece was a naturally occurring flint with the notch removed for a function. The flint is a mid whitish-brown colour with no evidence of cortex re-growth. The implement is 66.2mm long, 37.6mm wide, 15.5mm thick and weighs 36.1g.
