Copper alloy brooch. Cast cruciform brooch, comprising head, mid bow, lower bow and foot and retaining a single U-shaped lug behind the middle of the head and a folded catch plate between lappets at the top of the lower bow. Bent across the head by plough or spade strike. A rectangular plate has slightly indented or concave upper and lower edges, a central trapezoid panel, also plain, and is surmounted by an integrally cast half-round collared top knob which is lightly hollowed behind. An incised horizontal groove passes across the base of the central panel on the head, with oppo…

Copper alloy mount fragment. Small thin fragment, possibly from a mount of cross-shaped form with concave sides to its arms, retaining interlace strap-work with relict gilding on one side, with plain borders, one lightly convex and the other concave. Lightly bent, broken along one edge. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'I think that this piece represents a fragment decorated in what the Staffordshire Hoard report called the 'Early Insular Style' which was dated to c. 630-660. The matting-link interlace formed from three strands is characteristic of what was, in the Staffs. Hoar…

Copper alloy unidentified object. A small narrow cast rectangular-section bar of width 3.7mm, with a possibly zoomorphic rounded terminal resembling the eyes of a fly at one end; it is plain at the other end. Two drilled holes of diameter 1.3mm are set near the rounded terminal, between low flanges and a ridge linking them which bears four neatly incised transverse cuts. Here, two pairs of opposed half-round knops project from either side of the bar, slightly offset both from each other and from the holes, perhaps to represent legs. The terminal itself is divided by a tiny central rid…

Copper alloy strap end. A small cast asymmetrical tapered strap end with an expanded wedge-shaped split end occupied by a large bordered eye-shaped element of interlace; a pair of stumpy protrusions [legs or fins?] on one side only; continuing arcs of deeply defined interlace along its narrow body; and a longitudinally grooved and narrow pointed tongue with chevrons along its length protruding from narrow jaws, one possibly undershot and the other perhaps bearing a small rounded protruding eye. The interlace which begins strongly at the wedge-shaped end may continue in a pattern perha…

It's still a nice find, and David saw them as being an East Anglian/Lincolnshire type'. A small oval-ended cast hollow object, in the zoomorphic form of a quadruped beast with a gaping open jaw, and with short forelimbs resting on a broad flat tail with two grooves at its end. Cast gilded silver miniature square-headed brooch. The head bears a central motif of three nested rectangles enclosing a horizontal rib, with an outer border of closely juxtaposed stamped circles of diameter 1mm. A curved bow springs from the innermost of the nested rectangles, and has a central longitudinal rib flanked by paired grooves. A U-shaped lug on the back retains the corroded stub of an iron pin. The central rib continues to form the longer shaft of a voided cross potent set centrally in a rectilinear mid-bow expansion with its outer angles curved. There are three small curv…

Salmon coloured pebble, possibly quartzite [non-specialist identification by MF]; plough pebble, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments: '...this is a 'plough pebble' which had been hammered into the sole plate of a wooden plough. The object type needs to be PLOUGH with plough pebble in the classification. I'd suggest a date of c. 800 to 1400AD. These are important, Niall Brady is working on them'. This corrects an initial identification as a 'polisher' by this reporter; a note on that vague identification and a similar object are now relegated to the notes field below. …

Copper alloy object, kindly identified as part of a pistol or musket of English manufacture by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments as follows: 'I think I know what this is: the long lug with a pin through it is typical of the way that English guns were fixed together and I think that what you've got is a bit of trigger guard from a flintlock or percussion gun'. Cast curved plate with U-shaped ends, one broader than the other, and with a long U-shaped lug projecting from its concave side. Flint possible edge-polished fragment. A chunk of lentoid section with an apparently curving cutting edge with polishing immediately adjacent to it, but otherwise bearing the scars of covering scalar working entailing hard hammer removal of a small number of large flakes. Though the putative cutting edge is crisp, the object is broken c.40mm behind it. All surfaces, including the putative fracture surface, are identically covered by a dense creamy patina and are iron stained, features suggesting a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment followed by incorporation in gravels. Iron metalworking debris. A large oval-ended furnace bottom or bloom [the finder's identification] with a flat top and near-vertical if irregular sides, formed either in the base of an iron ore burning furnace or in a channel cut to receive molten metal from such furnace. The object was retrieved from a reported depth of c.0.9m, and involved the cooperative labours of two people working at arms' length to extract it from the hole. Copper alloy die stamp. Cast rectangular plate with rounded edges and with deeply incised detail on one flat side. A doubled groove forms the frame for angular interlaced figures of Salin Style 1. The central components of the motif bear transverse grooves suggesting a vermiform or possibly billeted texture, while some straight members ancillary to these and outside them, but confined within the frame, have a feathered surface texture. The finder suggests this to be a Pressblech die for the manufacture of impressed sheets of gold foil. This object would imply a nearby workshop or craf…

The loop at the end of the plate has four incised lines beside it, in the manner of a collar, while a saltire with a horizontal line below it is incised on the central part of the plate where one of the side loops projects. Copper alloy and iron ring. Cast annular biconvex object with a wide aperture of diameter 8mm, gilded on its outer surface. A drilled hole set centrally on its side, of diameter 1.6mm, is surrounded by an annular mark of diameter 3mm suggesting something more has been lost from the site; opposite this, there is an iron [tested with magnet]] feature of diameter 3mm, probably its pair. Copper alloy strap end. Narrow pointed strap end made from two sheets of thickness 0.5mm joined at the belt end by a rivet of diameter 1.6mm and length 3.3mm. It is uncertain how the pointed ends of the sheets were joined; perhaps by a spot of brazing. Though the form and construction is simple, it does not appear amongst numerous strap ends of medieval date reported from London, where comparable shapes were achieved by folding sheet metal. Kevin Leahy kindly notes similar strap ends to be common finds from 14th-century contexts at York. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1400. Length:…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast object, flat on one flat side and with a prominent convex drum-shaped feature on the other, which is elsewhere flat with a median thickness of c.2.8mm. Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be a post-medieval hinge, as the lack of pin gear and drum shaped feature disqualify it from being an Early Anglo-Saxon brooch. The form resembles that of a small and mutilated long brooch, though there is no trace of pin gear and the drum in position of 'bow' is at right angles to what would be expected, and is solid. Dark grey flint knife. Oval knife with abrupt hard hammer working from various directions covering both sides. There is a suggestion of battering along one edge of what may have been the dorsal aspect, to judge from the curved profile of the flake. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests that the low angle retouch should suggest the identification of this object as a knife, rather than a scraper, which was the initial suggestion advanced by this reporter.
