Copper alloy mount fragment. Small thin fragment, possibly from a mount of cross-shaped form with concave sides to its arms, retaining interlace strap-work with relict gilding on one side, with plain borders, one lightly convex and the other concave. Lightly bent, broken along one edge. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'I think that this piece represents a fragment decorated in what the Staffordshire Hoard report called the 'Early Insular Style' which was dated to c. 630-660. The matting-link interlace formed from three strands is characteristic of what was, in the Staffs. Hoar…

Copper alloy strap end. A small cast asymmetrical tapered strap end with an expanded wedge-shaped split end occupied by a large bordered eye-shaped element of interlace; a pair of stumpy protrusions [legs or fins?] on one side only; continuing arcs of deeply defined interlace along its narrow body; and a longitudinally grooved and narrow pointed tongue with chevrons along its length protruding from narrow jaws, one possibly undershot and the other perhaps bearing a small rounded protruding eye. The interlace which begins strongly at the wedge-shaped end may continue in a pattern perha…

Flint possible edge-polished fragment. A chunk of lentoid section with an apparently curving cutting edge with polishing immediately adjacent to it, but otherwise bearing the scars of covering scalar working entailing hard hammer removal of a small number of large flakes. Though the putative cutting edge is crisp, the object is broken c.40mm behind it. All surfaces, including the putative fracture surface, are identically covered by a dense creamy patina and are iron stained, features suggesting a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment followed by incorporation in gravels. Thi…

Iron metalworking debris. A large oval-ended furnace bottom or bloom [the finder's identification] with a flat top and near-vertical if irregular sides, formed either in the base of an iron ore burning furnace or in a channel cut to receive molten metal from such furnace. The object was retrieved from a reported depth of c.0.9m, and involved the cooperative labours of two people working at arms' length to extract it from the hole. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly comments that the object has the superficial appearance of cast iron, and that this would carry with it an implication of a date af…

Copper alloy strap end. Narrow pointed strap end made from two sheets of thickness 0.5mm joined at the belt end by a rivet of diameter 1.6mm and length 3.3mm. It is uncertain how the pointed ends of the sheets were joined; perhaps by a spot of brazing. Though the form and construction is simple, it does not appear amongst numerous strap ends of medieval date reported from London, where comparable shapes were achieved by folding sheet metal. Kevin Leahy kindly notes similar strap ends to be common finds from 14th-century contexts at York. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1400. Length:…

A copper alloy probable annular brooch of medieval date, probable about AD 1200 - 1400. The brooch is incomplete with part of the frame missing, including the presumed constriction for the pin. The frame is oval in plan and rectangular in section. The front face is decorated with incised symbols, perhaps intended to be letters, but none are clearly identifiable as Roman or lombardic letters. It is perhaps an inscription rendered by an illiterate maker. If the inscription is in blackletter, the lines are outlineing letters rather than forming letters themselves, but the legend still ap…

A possibly Early Medieval (late Anglo Saxon) copper alloy zoomorphic strap fitting with a suspension loop; a form described by Egan and Pritchard as a bar-mount with pendant loop, or in record LON-B3DD46 as a ring-link connector. The strap fitting possibly dates from the 9th or 10th century. This strap fitting has been cast in one piece with a front and back plate connected via a tapered loop which has a D-shaped cross-section. The front plate is ornate. The upper end is incomplete, broken across three prongs of an openwork design. The breaks are patinated. Two moulded curved ridge…

Copper alloy with gilding mount fragment. Cast flat backed plate in the form of the head of a bird with curving bill, probably one of a symetrically addorsed pair, as adduced by ragged broken edges behind the body. An eye is defined naturalistically in relief, as is a nostril at the top of the beak, but the neck and upper body afford fields for curvilinear interlaced ornament, each strand of which comprises paired ridges highlighted by deeply incised (or appearing thus) gutters between them. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly identifies this piece as of Salin Style 2, and as such an indication of …

Copper alloy pin. Cast slightly tapering pin of round section with a flat openwork head with engrailed edges and a balanced curvilinear composition, possibly abstracted from the popular motif of a hand grasping a fruit or pearl. On one side - the better preserved - a collar is provided at the base of the head by a horizontal series of tiny and closely spaced punched dots of diameter c.0.5mm; similar dots also form a border motif for the open parts of the head, probably on both sides. The shank is bent through 90 degrees at its mid point, a feature of hair pins sometimes thought to rel…

Lead Pump seal Weights, as kindly identified by Dr Kevin Leahy. Two cast plates (a and b). Each object is a plate with one rounded end and an opposed straight edge, formed like the heel of a boot. The objects have bevelled edges, which for a heel would be angled inward and forward. The 'upper' surfaces bear integrally cast waisted studs with rounded heads of diameter 22-25mm. The larger of these objects retains fragments of thick (circa 4mm) leather in the waist of the stud, which probably passed through a slightly smaller hole cut in the leather. The leather would be oiled to serve…

Iron possible hinge strap fragment. Wrought iron strip of rectangular section with a flattened oval end; the object is broken at its other end next to a circular hole of estimated diameter 7mm. This identification was kindly offered by Dr Kevin Leahy. Given there is only a single hole for a nail to attach the putative strap to a door or shutter, and given that the hole is far from its finished end, an alternative interpretation as a tine detached from a tool such as a hay rake or eel spear might also be entertained. The finder's suggestion that this could be a weapon fragment is not s…

Copper alloy Weight Box. A cast box with separately cast hinged lid. The box is circular, expanding in size from base to lid, and bears eight external vertical ribs; two pairs of ribs are closely set, defining the opposed positions of a hinge and a catch. An irregular stamped pattern on the lid resembles ring and dot decoration, and is apparently arranged in a cruciform pattern. Several tiny fragments of stone or metal were contained in the box, which was opened at the time of discovery, broken during this investigation, and is now glued shut. The finder initially considere…

An early medieval gilt copper alloy mount. It is square with concave sides with an animal's head protruding from each of the four corners. The surface is flat and decorated with Borre style knotwork. It has a length of 25.1mm and a width of 24.8mm, it has a thickness of 4.4mm and it weighs 10.92g. It probably dates from the late 9th or 10th century.

A fragment of a late seventeenth or eighteenth century two part, cast copper alloy buckle frame. The surviving part is in the form of a human head, possibly a king's head.
