A fragment of a Roman bone object, possibly a pin dating to c.AD 43-410. The object comprises a squashed globular, faceted and sub-rectangular-sectioned head with an off-centre circular hole or aperture. A sub-rectangular shaft, sub-circular in cross-section, extends 11.04 mm in length from the head, it is slightly facetted and terminates with a broken blunt end. Roman cast copper alloy Colchester derivative, rear spring hook brooch of Mackreth, 2011, Chapter 2, Part 2 Group 1.b., 60-63, Plate 38 of first century AD. Bow D sectioned and decorated with a longitudinal groove containing a stamped, chain like line. The catch plate is missing as is one wing of the head bar and the pin and spring mechanism. Copper alloy balance arm fragment, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy, correcting an initial erroneous identification by this reporter. Cast rectangular plate with a U-shaped tab projecting from either long edge and with a circular loop at one end, in all cases with drilled apertures of diameter 2.4mm. The loop at the end of the plate has four incised lines beside it, in the manner of a collar, while a saltire with a horizontal line below it is incised on the central part of the plate where one of the side loops projects. An incomplete probable silver-gilt Thealby brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch is comprised of rectangular wings the reverse of which act as a double lug hinge mechanism for the pin. The pin no longer remains and patches of copper corrosion mark the remains of the axis bar within the lugs. An iron whittle tanged knife of Roman to Medieval date. The blade measures 93.02mm in length and the tang 13.17mm in length. The tang is incomplete. Each edge is slightly curved with the cutting edge measuring 1.28mm thick and the opposite edge measuring 2.07mm. The knife terminates with a rounded point. The surfaces of the object are uneven due to corrosion. It is mid-brown in colour. The form is of Manning's Roman Type 16, which he says is a long-live type. A Roman iron knife blade and a cast copper alloy scabbard fitting, found together. The knife measures 125mm in length, 16.5mm in width and 6mm in thickness and it weighs 33.24g. The scabbard fitting, which came from the top of the sheath measures 35mm x 11.5mm x 8mm and the metal is c. 1.2mm thick. It weighs 10.07g. This type of knife is long-lived, but the scabbard mount probably dates from the earlier Roman period, that is the 1st or 2nd century AD. Cast copper unidentified object, possibly a Roman mirror handle dating from c. AD43-410. It is in very good condition without any corrisive products present on the surface. It is straight, with a circular cross-section and one forked end. There are very small rivet holes in the two sides of the fork, probably for attaching it to the actual mirror plate which would have also been made from copper-alloy, but highly polished. The handle is decorated with a simple egg-and-reel motif/mouldings.

Copper alloy and iron balance fragment. Central beam and one hinged arm from a tiny balance. The arm has a bulbous end, perhaps to permit tied attachment of a pan. A separate pin of diameter 1.5mm and length 3.8mm joins arm and beam. Ferrous corrosion at the centre of the beam suggests provision for the suspension of the set of scales. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be of Roman date, though no other material of that date was reported with it. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 27.9mm, Width: 6.7mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 2.12gms.

A cast copper alloy and iron Roman folding knife; the cast copper-alloy handle depicts a nude standing figure, possibly female. The handle is sub-rectangular and openwork. It is decorated in enamel with a sunburst or flower or star like motif on a field of enamel that now appears red.
