Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Unusual lead alloy pendant. Although very worn, the face of the pendant appears to have had human or zoomorphic designs, almost resembling the type commonly found on gold bracteates. The reverse of the pendant has unusual incised 'free-hand' decoration, the meaning of which is unclear. There appears to be a large circle containing a smaller circle and vertical line. To the above left and right of the outer circle are two triangles, each enclosing a letter. The other explanation could be that the object is some sort of seal matrix where the lead casting has been made but no matrix …

Unidentified lead alloy object. This object is suboval in plan and flat in section. It is essentially a piece of lead decorated with a human face. The face comprises of a raised T shape that forms the brow and nose. Beneath the nose are two parallel horizontal lines that form the lips. Either side of the nose are two raised circles that form the eyes. These facial features are contained within a crude beaded border that runs around the circumference of the object. The object has a creamy beige patina and is only slightly worn. It is 13.5mm long, 11.52mm wide, 1.84mm thick and weighs 1.…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy nummular brooch. The flat circular brooch is quite worn and slightly misshapen. The brooch appears to imitate the reverse of an eleventh century coin. Around the outer edge are traces of a beaded border, which encloses a inscription. All that remains of the blundered inscription are the letters []N/D[]. In the centre is a short voided cross. The back of the brooch has two incomplete pierced lugs to secure the pin and a folded over catchplate. Although the pin is missing, a trace of iron corrosion around one of the lugs suggests that it once had an iron pin. The survi…

Cast lead alloy (pewter?) disc brooch of later Anglo Saxon (probably 10th century) date. The brooch has been much plough damaged; it was discovered conjoined by a small strand of metal, but subsequently has been accidentally broken into two parts during recording. The brooch would have originally been circular, but it is now more oval or sub-rectangular. It is slightly domed in profile and is convex in cross-section. It measures 38.9mm length, 31.1mm width, is a maximum of 2.4mm thick, and weighs 14.14g. The front is decorated with a cast design which is much abraded. The overall desi…

A lead alloy probable brooch fragment which is probably from the mid Early Medieval period. The fragment is a sub rectangular flat plate with one end rounded, and the other end broken with the majority of the brooch missing. The fragment is divided into two panels by a transverse raised bar. There seems to be a plain border round each panel, and interlace patterns within. The reverse is plain and flat apart from two lugs at the rounded end. These were probably originally pierced to hold the pin bar, but are now corroded and the bar and pin are missing. It is probably part of a middle S…

Complete cast lead-alloy spindle whorl. The artefact is circular in shape and "D" shape in section, with a large central perforation measuring 11.5mm in diameter. Both the upper & lower surfaces of the object are decorated with a series of raised lines cast in relief. These markings are often believed to be runic or other lettering but in most cases, as in this one, the lines cannot be said to represent letters and are a purely abstract design. The most probable date for this artefact is the Medieval period, circa 1100-1300 AD, but due to a lack of stratified excavated examples it…
