Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A circular cast copper-alloy gilded mount of probable medieval date. The lower surface is essentially flat, but heavily corroded. There is a pair of probable rivets near the circumference with a probable rove under one of them. They correspond to a pair of rivet heads on the upper surface. These are mirrored on the other side of the brooch by a pair of punched circles; these do not feature any obvious remains of rivets and there is no clear evidence for them on the lower surface. The upper surface is decorated in relief within a beaded border. The decoration consists of a creature …

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a cast copper-alloy brooch of early-medieval date consisting of the lower bow and foot (6th century AD). The foot plate is flat with cusped side projections each decorated with three hollows. The projections taper towards the terminal which appears to have been slightly truncated as a result of old damage. The field between the projections is decorated with a so-called 'chip carved' triple triangular motif with a further engraved line on each side. Much gilding survives within the recesses, with some also present on the bow. On the lower surface of the plate is an abra…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy key of possible post-medieval date. The object consists of a large sub-oval loop with very slightly off-centre circular hole bevelled internally on both faces (countersunk) (Dia.: 8.55mm). The lower edge of the loop is flattened and the object tapers to a stem (W.: c. 8.5mm). The stem is of flat rectangular cross-section and flares out at its base to a double ridged collar (W.: 9.25mm). Below this collar is a spiral, three and a half twists of which survive, that tapers from a diamater of 6.45mm to 4.45mm at an apparent break. This hand-cut screw thre…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded iron trident-shaped artefact of possible Roman date. The object has lost one of its side prongs. The central prong is enlarged (W.: 15.85mm) before tapering to a point. It has been bent in profile. The tang is solid and tapers in both length and thickness over c. 37mm. It has a rectangular cross-section. The artefact could have acted as a weapon as it seems somewhat over elaborate as an agricultural or fishing tool.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly corroded and damaged medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end with similarities to Thomas Class B, Type 6, an 11th-century type (Thomas 2003, 6), although thought to be 12th or 13th century in date (Kevin Leahy pers. comm. 8th June 2011).
The split at the attachment end is c. 13.6mm in length. A single rivet remains in situ within the two perforations, one above the other. The upper rivet has been lost following a loss to the side of the hole of the lower part of the split. The upper part of the strap-end is wedge shaped, tapering gradually in width to a central transverse r…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy openwork mount of late early-medieval date decorated unifacially. The mount is broadly oval in shape and with a rounded protrusion on either of the narrow outer edges. These protrusions are perforated for attachment; no rivets survive, although on a similar example quoted below a corroded rivet survives in iron. There are a further six, decorative perforations in the mount, of varying sizes. The upper surface of the mount is decorated in low relief with an interlacing zoomorphic design with diagonal symmetry. The design appears to be two Ringerike-style beasts whos…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An almost complete early-medieval strap-end of 8th/9th-century date and probable Continental origin (Kevin Leahy pers. comm. 6th July 2011), broken and bent slightly at its tip. The attachment end of this tongue-shaped strap-end is wedge shaped. It is recessed on the upper surface; within the thinned section (Th.: 1.8mm) are four perforations, the two at the corners slightly larger than those between them.
The sides of the strap-end are broadly symmetrical. On the plain lower surface they can be seen to taper from the attachment end (W.: 15.3mm) to a waist 12.1mm wide after c. 12mm.…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy unidentified object of probable late early-medieval date. The artefact is broken at both ends. The top end is incomplete, a recess is visible at the break, presumably the cylindrical recess would have accommodated a circular cross-sectioned axis bar. The cylindrical recess is at a one hundred and thirty five degree angle suggesting that the artefact was offset to the bar. The artefact gradually tapers towards a zoomorphic head. The head is depicted through raised mouldings and incisions. Located at the top of the head is a V-shaped incision which is sit…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy gilt pin of probable Post-Medieval date (c.1500-1600), missing part of the pin shank. It measures 49.80mm in length and weighs 2.84g.
The head is bi-conical and oval in cross-section, with a median rib and another rib encircling the flattened (circular) top. A pair of such ribs encircle the join with the shaft (the upper of which is slightly misaligned). The head measures 15.97x12.03x7.62mm and is rather squashed on one side. It retains much of its original gilding and has a small hole (from damage) on either face.
The pin shaft survives to a length of c…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An apparently complete copper alloy unidentified object, probably Early-Medieval to Medieval in date (c.400-1500) and with no obvious breaks. Measures 30.08x14.03x2.91mm and weighs 3.93g.
The object is flat and curving in profile, with one crimped end, tapering and thickening to become D-shaped in cross-section (5.23x2.91mm) though apparently not crimped to hold anything - there is a very slight opening only. The object is otherwise rectangular in cross-section with the opposite end measuring 14.03x1.42mm. The sides narrow to c.13mm, whereby they thicken (2.76mm) and taper sharply i…
