A cast lead alloy nummular brooch. The flat circular brooch is quite worn and slightly misshapen. The brooch appears to imitate the reverse of an eleventh century coin. Around the outer edge are traces of a beaded border, which encloses a inscription. All that remains of the blundered inscription are the letters []N/D[]. In the centre is a short voided cross. The back of the brooch has two incomplete pierced lugs to secure the pin and a folded over catchplate. Although the pin is missing, a trace of iron corrosion around one of the lugs suggests that it once had an iron pin. The survi…

Possibly an incomplete cast copper-alloy Anglo Saxon spatula. Objects with spatulate ends, or double-ended implements with one spatulate end, are a feature of monastic asemblages of the later 8th and early 9th centuries. An association with Middle Saxon activity is perhaps preferable to the possible use of the object as a cosmetic implement from an Early Anglo-Saxon grave which was first proposed. The suggested date range is accordingly extended [by MF]. The circular-section shank flattens at the top to a perforated lug. The base of the shank expands to an incomplete flat rectangular …
