Object type: PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, probably the shaft from a pin, a spoon handle, cosmetic implement or similar object of Roman date. It is formed from a flat sheet of copper-alloy that has been rolled to create a tube that tapers towards one end. A seam is visible along one side, which has been reworked in order to hide or disguise the seam. The object terminates at both ends in old breaks making identification of its original form or function impossible. It has a dark green patina with some pitting in places and measures 50.33mm in length, 3.56mm in diameter, and 1.69g in weigh…

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy 'heavy duty' beehive type thimble, dating from 1400 to 1550AD. The thimble is domed with slightly flared sides and a rounded top. Probably drilled although it could be cast, it is often difficult to distinguish between cast and hammered thimbles. A series of closely and unevenly set circular dents cover the sides, leaving a plain circular area around the crown.. The drilled pits begin at the top and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a regular manner. It is possible that the thimble could be an open type as the top is missing. The length is 19mm, and the wid…

A near complete copper alloy buckle frame with hinged copper alloy plate that is missing the pin due to old breaks. It has a D-shaped frame with integral narrow offset bar, projecting terminals at the point where the bar joins the frame, and flaring exterior edge. The back face of the frame is flat and undecorated, however the front face has extensive moulded decoration in high relief.
