Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. A small narrow cast rectangular-section bar of width 3.7mm, with a possibly zoomorphic rounded terminal resembling the eyes of a fly at one end; it is plain at the other end. Two drilled holes of diameter 1.3mm are set near the rounded terminal, between low flanges and a ridge linking them which bears four neatly incised transverse cuts. Here, two pairs of opposed half-round knops project from either side of the bar, slightly offset both from each other and from the holes, perhaps to represent legs. The terminal itself is divided by a tiny central rid…

Copper alloy stirrup mount, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy, who comments '...see David Williams' 'Stirrup Terminals', Finds Research Group, Datasheet 24, particularly Fig. 3.The Urnes type eye is a give away. It's still a nice find, and David saw them as being an East Anglian/Lincolnshire type'. A small oval-ended cast hollow object, in the zoomorphic form of a quadruped beast with a gaping open jaw, and with short forelimbs resting on a broad flat tail with two grooves at its end. The flat tail may indicate the subject to be a beaver: a creature known to Anglo-Saxon England, if …

Salmon coloured pebble, possibly quartzite [non-specialist identification by MF]; plough pebble, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments: '...this is a 'plough pebble' which had been hammered into the sole plate of a wooden plough. The object type needs to be PLOUGH with plough pebble in the classification. I'd suggest a date of c. 800 to 1400AD. These are important, Niall Brady is working on them'. This corrects an initial identification as a 'polisher' by this reporter; a note on that vague identification and a similar object are now relegated to the notes field below.

Terminal from a late Early Medieval copper alloy penannular brooch, probably Irish and of 9th century date. The terminal is flat, triangular, and is rectangular in section. Although all three sides have patches of corrosion, the original wall can be seen thus demonstrating this is a terminal. The left and right perimeters of the terminal are decorated with four incised straight lines. A straight incised line is located from the centre of the terminal and travels to the outer edge. Three diagonally incised lines extend downwards from the central line on either side, thus forming an abs…

Copper alloy object, kindly identified as part of a pistol or musket of English manufacture by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments as follows: 'I think I know what this is: the long lug with a pin through it is typical of the way that English guns were fixed together and I think that what you've got is a bit of trigger guard from a flintlock or percussion gun'.
Cast curved plate with U-shaped ends, one broader than the other, and with a long U-shaped lug projecting from its concave side. The lug has a filled drilled hole of diameter c.2mm, suggesting the object pivoted when in use. A fur…

Copper alloy die stamp. Cast rectangular plate with rounded edges and with deeply incised detail on one flat side. A doubled groove forms the frame for angular interlaced figures of Salin Style 1. The central components of the motif bear transverse grooves suggesting a vermiform or possibly billeted texture, while some straight members ancillary to these and outside them, but confined within the frame, have a feathered surface texture. The finder suggests this to be a Pressblech die for the manufacture of impressed sheets of gold foil. This object would imply a nearby workshop or craf…

Copper alloy harness mount fragment. A cast semi-circular plate with the stubs of a probably rectangular loop projecting from its curving edge. The opposite edge is broken across a central member flanked by voids in an apparently openwork scheme; one strut remains to one side and its counterpart may be inferred on the other side. The curved edge of the plate bears an incised border to an interlaced anthropomorphic scheme which resembles the eyes and brows of a human mask. Each eye and brow is represented by paired and nested curls. Symetrical triangular arrangements of lines above the…

Copper alloy balance arm fragment, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy, correcting an initial erroneous identification by this reporter. Cast rectangular plate with a U-shaped tab projecting from either long edge and with a circular loop at one end, in all cases with drilled apertures of diameter 2.4mm. The loop at the end of the plate has four incised lines beside it, in the manner of a collar, while a saltire with a horizontal line below it is incised on the central part of the plate where one of the side loops projects. Copper alloy and iron ring. Cast annular biconvex object with a wide aperture of diameter 8mm, gilded on its outer surface. A drilled hole set centrally on its side, of diameter 1.6mm, is surrounded by an annular mark of diameter 3mm suggesting something more has been lost from the site; opposite this, there is an iron [tested with magnet]] feature of diameter 3mm, probably its pair. A vertical line on the outer surface, approximately midway between the aperture/s, suggests a break in the gilt surface. A raised circumferential band matches the position of the apertures, though now muc…

An Early Medieval copper-alloy Cross Brooch. The brooch was original cross-shaped, but two of the arms are now incomplete. Each arm is sub-rectangular in plan, being slightly wider at the terminal than at the centre of the cross. The perimeter is decorated by a single linear groove. One arm contains three irregularly places diagonal grooves or 'dashes'. The other arm only contains two. In the centre of the brooch are four ringed dot motifs. These are roughly arranged one at the beginning of each arm, but they are somewhat crudely done. An integral loop is located behind one of the arm…

An Early Medieval copper alloy mount dating to the period c.AD 900-980. The mount is broadly trapezoidal in plan, with an incised border around three of the edges. The decoration is openwork and consists of a trifoliate motif, which forms the fourth edge, and an incised curvilinear design. There are five apertures arranged in an oval towards the narrower terminal. Traces of gilding remain on the surface, and where this is not present there is a green patina. The reverse is undecorated.

Gild copper alloy disc, with a central hole. The disc is divided into four fields by a plain cross in the four angles of which are the figures of animals surrounded by interlace. Each of these looks back over its own body and appears to have wings, although the details are difficult to discern. The eyes are marked by incised dots, the forehead and nose are separated by a steep step and, behind the eye of each animal, are two converging lines. Dark grey flint knife. Oval knife with abrupt hard hammer working from various directions covering both sides. There is a suggestion of battering along one edge of what may have been the dorsal aspect, to judge from the curved profile of the flake. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests that the low angle retouch should suggest the identification of this object as a knife, rather than a scraper, which was the initial suggestion advanced by this reporter. Suggested date: Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC.

The fragment is broken at both ends and has tapering sides. It measures 12.7mm wide at the narrow end. The front of the object gilded and is decorated in Style I, thus dating the fragment to the second half of the 6th century.
