Copper alloy object, kindly identified as part of a pistol or musket of English manufacture by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments as follows: 'I think I know what this is: the long lug with a pin through it is typical of the way that English guns were fixed together and I think that what you've got is a bit of trigger guard from a flintlock or percussion gun'. Cast curved plate with U-shaped ends, one broader than the other, and with a long U-shaped lug projecting from its concave side. The lug has a filled drilled hole of diameter c.2mm, suggesting the object pivoted when in use. A fur…

A cast iron Post Medieval cannon ball, probably dating to circa AD 1500 - 1700. The object is spherical in shape with pitting and corrosion visible on the surface. The cannon ball has an orange coloured patina across its surfaces. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail and full diameter and weight. The diameter and weight suggest that the type of cannon used to fire the cannon ball may have been the Demi-Culverin. This cannon had a 4 inch bore and fired a ball weighing 9.5 lb (4309 g). Gordon…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast object, flat on one flat side and with a prominent convex drum-shaped feature on the other, which is elsewhere flat with a median thickness of c.2.8mm. Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be a post-medieval hinge, as the lack of pin gear and drum shaped feature disqualify it from being an Early Anglo-Saxon brooch. The form resembles that of a small and mutilated long brooch, though there is no trace of pin gear and the drum in position of 'bow' is at right angles to what would be expected, and is solid. Traces of gilding remain on one side of…
