A Medieval (1200-1400) strap end of copper alloy composition (as evidenced by substantial greening), with remaining elements of silvering. The object is narrow and thin, tapering from 10mm at the widest surviving part to 7mm at the narrowest. There are two visible plates connected by a pin, though it is clear from the break point at the narrowest end that there were originally two pins and it is at this weak point it has snapped. some compressed dried soil obscures a view of the inside. The upper plate is decorated with a clear border, the area inside of which has remnants of a c…

Copper alloy strap end. Narrow pointed strap end made from two sheets of thickness 0.5mm joined at the belt end by a rivet of diameter 1.6mm and length 3.3mm. It is uncertain how the pointed ends of the sheets were joined; perhaps by a spot of brazing. Though the form and construction is simple, it does not appear amongst numerous strap ends of medieval date reported from London, where comparable shapes were achieved by folding sheet metal. Kevin Leahy kindly notes similar strap ends to be common finds from 14th-century contexts at York. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1400. Length:…

A complete cast copper alloy sub rectangular double sheet strap end, Medieval strap end, 13 to14th century AD in date. The strap end consists of two pieces of sheet copper alloy metal, riveted together. The strap end is sub rectangular in plan, tapering to a narrowing neck. The base of the strap end finishes in a trefoil lobed shape. Two rivets are present at the top and bottom, which would have secured the strap end onto the original strap. Both the front and back plate are worn and it appears to be undecorated. The strap end is similar to LVPL-62D175, LEIC-13FA43. The length is 40mm…

Medieval, or possibly post medieval, copper alloy strap end dating between c1066 to c1600 AD, probably the fourteenth century. The rivets are still in place though the plate on one side has a signicant amount missing. There appears to be remnant white metal finish, possibly silvering. The length is 34mm and the width 21mm.

Unusual probably 14th century copper alloy buckle plate. It is decorated with massed punch marks delineating a man wearing a Phrygian cap which is similar to Roman decoration but there are no Roman parallels for this object. Again there are no clear parallels in the medieval for either the method of decoration, with the massed punch marks or the decoration on the corners. But on balance it is probably Medieval 14th century when, after all, they had their contacts with the east. The reddish discolouration suggests it may have been gilded. The length is 45mm, and the width is 22mm.

A slightly corroded and damaged medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end with similarities to Thomas Class B, Type 6, an 11th-century type (Thomas 2003, 6), although thought to be 12th or 13th century in date (Kevin Leahy pers. comm. 8th June 2011). The split at the attachment end is c. 13.6mm in length. A single rivet remains in situ within the two perforations, one above the other. The upper rivet has been lost following a loss to the side of the hole of the lower part of the split. The upper part of the strap-end is wedge shaped, tapering gradually in width to a central transverse r…

A cast copper alloy medieval strap end or bell clapper. The object is formed from an almost spherical ball from which a bifurcation extends. This is now broken through, where there was once a single rivet hole. It is possible that this is where the strap end joined the strap, but equally possible this break could mark the joint of the bell clapper to a leather strap inside the bell. The metal is worn and pitted. The metal is a mid greenish-brown colour.

A cast copper alloy single looped oval buckle, with a wide ornate outer edge, complete with the buckle plate. The buckle frame is wider on the outer edge and this edge extends outside of the frame. There is no pin recess on the outer edge. The strap bar is narrow and off-set. The pin is missing. The folded buckle plate remains in situ, around the strap bar. A rivet hole and rivet survive at the open end of the plate. The metal is a dark reddish-brown colour. These buckles date from circa AD 1250 - 1400. Parallels for this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead, 2003, p23.

A complete cast copper-alloy strap end, dating to the 15th Century. The strap end is formed from two plates. The front plate is much larger than the back plate and the two are joined together via four rivets (two iron and two copper alloy). The strap end in roughly rectangular in shape with two leaf-shaped extensions, projecting from one of the shorter sides of the rectangular. There is an oval aperture below the leaves, in between them, where they meet the main body of the strap end. The leaves have been incised with further linear decoration, which resembles a stylised depiction of…
