A copper-alloy Post-Medieval artefact of a type normally described as part of naval uniform or a sword belt fitting. The decoration on this artefact should be compared to that seen on the rapier knuckle guard recorded in PAS record CAM-F5F949 that has been dated to the 18th century AD. However, this type of strap-fitting is often assigned a 17th to 18th century AD date.
This artefact weighs 9.10g and in its current condition has a length of 48.6mm. One terminal is rounded with a 'D' shaped cross-section. This terminal has a width of 4.7mm and thickness of 3.8mm. The reverse surfa…

An early post-medieval (1500-1700) copper-alloy strap fitting from a sword belt hanger, dating to the period 1500 to 1700. The object consists of a hooked plate that would have been one of three to have hung from a mount with three suspension loops. In turn, scabbard straps would have been attached to the plates. The strap fitting has two rivet holes which are now filled with iron corrosion.
The hooked plate is sub-triangular in shape and decorated with an elaborate scrolling foliate pattern with fronds to either side from a central stem, reaching into a trifoliate end which has a pi…

An incomplete late Iron Age to early Roman cast zoomorphic copper-alloy strap-fitting. A strap-distributor dating to the period 50 BC - AD 50. It is incomplete insofar as at least one of the two conjoined circular loops (D-shaped in cross-section) has broken off. There are worn projections which emerge beneath the horse's head, and it is from here that a possible third circular loop projected, now broken off. The remaining loop is circular, measuring 20.47mm in diameter, with the frame of the loop measuring 3.21mm in thickness.
Inbetween the two (or possibly three) loops projects a …

An incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval (1600-1800) strap-fitting, missing most of each flat integral lug to the reverse. The object is circular and domed, being hollow to the reverse and convex to the front, with a flat rim flanking it. The dome is divided into two stepped areas, the lower of which has a concentric groove close to its upper edge. Topping the upper stepped area is a flattened circular knop with a central perforation. Traces of white-metal coating can be seen in the groove and on the flat rim, which has a thickened edge and two small holes where the metal is very thin…

An early post-medieval copper-alloy strap fitting from a sword belt hanger, dating to the period 1500 to 1700. It consists of a incomplete hooked plate. The strap fitting is missing its hooked end and has broken across a rivet hole. Originally this would have been one of a trio of plates, which would have hung from a mount with three suspension loops. In turn, scabbard straps would have been attached to the plates.
The suspension hook extends from the plate and curves back on itself before terminating in a knop which is squashed slightly to one side. The plate is triangular in shape w…

The belt mount is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the reverse. It is triangular in shape with an elongated D-shaped projection extending from the centre of the short end (3.4mm wide, 4.4mm long). To the reverse two worns stumps remain of the attachment spikes; these are alinged longitudinally and close together at the wider end of the object.
Much of the original patina remains to the front of the object, where it is smooth, shiny and mid-green in colour. …

A medieval (1200-1400) copper alloy bar-mount with pendent loop, of a different copper alloy.
The bar mount is solid with central and terminal lobes. Between the lobes are thin bands of transverse grooves. The central lobe (5.87mm diameter, 1.65mm thick) has a central circular hole 2.47mm in diameter. The terminal lobes contain an in situ rivet each. From one of these lobes a 2.60mm wide projection extends and curves back on itself to hold the rivet, expanding to a pentagonal terminal. From this loop hangs the pendent loop, 10.12mm in diameter (internal 6.6mm).
The rivets have a dia…

An incomplete, copper alloy, post-medieval strap fitting, dating from 1500 - 1700. It measures 24.71mm in length, 10.34 mm in width, 2.12 mm in thickness and weighs 2.13g. Both integral attachment hooks are in place to the reverse, but the tip of one is broken off.
The strap fitting is in the form of an acorn. At one end a small lug indicates the stem and a rim at 13.47mm down from the lug forms the acorn 'cup' in the upper surface of the strap fitting. On the reverse, the surface is plain and mostly flat. The strap fitting has a 'D' shaped cross section. The copper alloy is badly …
