Object type: FLAKED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic (4000 - 2,100 BC) flint flaked axehead with possible (old) damage to the butt end. The axehead has an elliptical cross-section, being rather flatter on one face than the other. This face has transverse flake removals behind the cutting edge for c.one third of the length of the axehead. The cutting edge (41.7mm wide) is convex in shape and slightly lop-sided. Otherwise flake removals, to both faces, are from the centre towards the edge. The more convex face has a central ridge of coretex, tapering off to one edge just before the butt-end (21.2x19.3mm). At this point, the b…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete Neolithic (4000 - 2100 BC) polished flint axehead wih damage to the butt end and missing the cutting edge, probably from around half the original length of the axehead. The axehead is pointed-oval in cross-section and has been bifacially worked with polishing apparent on both faces and sides. Flakes appears to have been removed both on top of and beneath the polishing. Iron staining is apparent on the edges of flake removals. The sides of the axehead are faceted and flat, surviving to a height of c.5-6mm. The flint is opaque and light grey/ cream in colour. The axehead…

County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An undatable Prehistoric (Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000-800 BC) tertiary flint flake, opaque and heavily patinated with spots of iron staining on both faces. The bulb of percussion is apparently missing. There is no apparent retouch, although the distal end narrows to a tang, presumably formed by the removal of shorter and narrower flakes to to the right side before this was struck. Measures 32.1x14.7x4.3mm and weighs 1.56g.

An undatable Prehistoric (Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000-800 BC) retouched tertiary flint flake, opaque and heavily patinated. The bulb of percussion is low. There is apparent retouch to the lower right dorsal edge (long, scaled, low-angle), creating a tang of the lower half of the flake. Measures 40.6x14.9x2.7mm and weighs 1.63g. Kevin Leahy, Finds Adviser, comments 'I did wonder if this could be a late Glacial 'shouldered point' but the extent of the retouch is not convincing' (pers. comm. 7.11.17).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic to Neolithic (10,000 - 2,100 BC) flint flaked axehead, perhaps an adze, with a plano-convex profile. It is elliptical in shape with a slightly wider end (the cutting edge, 34.8 mm) than the other (the butt end, 27.2 mm). Although the sides are curving, the cutting edge itself is horizontal. There is perhaps some damage to the butt end resulting in it also being horizontal. The flint is opaque and creamy-grey in colour. There are prominent arises on both faces with iron staining. A small area of cortex remains close to the cutting edge on one face. The other face has ret…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large, relatively thin flint flake, slightly curved with large flake scars from several directions on the dorsal surface. It has well-abraded flake-edges from post-depositional damage. There is some possible secondary flaking on the proximal right dorsal margin, but no other evidence for retouch. The date is uncertain within the Prehistoric period and it could be later Prehistoric if found in a beach environment. However its findspot proximity to known Palaeolithic activity suggests it may well be of Palaeolithic date (c.500,000 - 10,000 BC). It measures 103.85x60.44x14.52mm and we…

A fragment of a Neolithic partially polished flint axehead or chisel, the cutting edge reworked probably in the Early Bronze Age, and probably after the original object had been damaged, to form a knife, scraper or other tool. It measures 42.32x52.92x13.77mm and weighs 28.92g. The flint is 100% heavily patinated, although the narrow flake removal scars on the retouched face are of a slightly different colour to the patination of the polished areas (towards the cutting edge on this face).
